This from the CBS folks:

Reds outfielder Chris Heisey appeared to re-aggravate his hamstring injury while rehabbing for Double-A Pensacola on Monday night, the Pensacola News Journal reports. He played defense in the first inning but was pulled for a pinch hitter in the bottom half of the frame.

Heisey, who was placed on the disabled list April 29 due to a strained hamstring, was expected to be activated Friday.

Reds reliever Manny Parra, who is on the 15-day disabled list, began his rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola on Monday. He worked a scoreless inning, giving up one hit while striking out two. The left-hander did not walk a batter while throwing 13 pitches, nine for strikes.

Parra has been sidelined since April 23 due to a strained pectoral muscle.

It may be a stall move. DFA may be the next assignment for a couple of players...Where does Parra fit ? Unfortunately, he's got a MLB salary. So does Heisey. Before we start compromising no options for options, I'd rather not be in 2nd place. I'm convinced there are better options talent wise than both.

Heisey is a role player. He should not be counted on to be a full time starter

RedsFan,

I think both players can be traded for. The Cubs are looking for a LH out of the pen and Heisey would fit in there plans in the short term in LF.

By trading away both players we might be able to pick up Soriano and place him in LF

Soriano would be a rental but I like the guy in some situations.
Not sure the Reds would deal inside the division in mid-year, but they might.

John,

My thinking is, Heisey is not a starter. Parra is a rent a wreck anyways. The Cubs want to get rid of Soriano and his contract. deal 2 for the one and get some money with it.

So we pay$16 mil for Soriano AND $ 12 mil for Ludwick to be a 4th OF when he gets back ? Heisey and Parra make about $3 mil combined. Even if the Cubbies are generous enough to pick up some of Sorianos salary, it's a conundrum with Ludwick. Also, for a team Dusty loves to spin chemistry, how is Soriano going to fit ? He was a tumor on Dusty's buddy Frank Robinsons arse in Washington. Robby was the guy that took Sorianos 30 errors a year at 2b and made him a bad OF, after Soriano refused to play LF, and Tobinson explained to him that he would play LF or be duspended without pay. Soriano played LF with a don't give a schidt attitude until they traded him. Us that guy worth what he hits ?

The Reds more than likely can't afford Soriano. His contract is through 2014 and he's owed $18M next season . The $12-13M he's still owed for the balance of this season is more than the Reds can probably afford. There are cheaper options than that. Nothing wrong with the idea, the price probably isn't right.

If I had that kind of money, I might give it to Choo to stay here, and try to find one of our speedy CFs home in the lineup...if any of them (Hamilton, Robinson, etc) can hit above the Stubbs rate.

That's a fair argument. If Soriano is going to cost that kind of loot, tie it to Choo, move him to LF next year and see if the Hambo can hit and run. So far, the problem with LF is that they are hitting like SS's ... except for Paul, who would be exposed with long-term PT. Lutz isn't going to stick this year. Maybe he will if Heisey can't get off the schneid.

All the same, Luddy has a 2-year deal so he's not going anyplace. I fear his shoulder will turn him into a new version of Scott Rolen. Maybe since this is Luddy's first such injury, he will be OK. Rolen had repeated problems, doubtless caused by inadequate therapy.

That does not address the Parra issue. Question is: How useful is he? If he is, why didn't somebody else sign him? Why do we want to keep him? Parra can pitch, but he's not needed on this team.

I think Parra was a risk, expecting him to be able to get ONE lefty hitter out a game, three times a week. He can ( so can I) pitch behind 8 runs...someone has to, and why risk VALUABLE relievers in that scenario ? There are 12 pitchers on a staff... maybe one mop up guy is needed ?

In today's pay scale, Parra was a greasy hamburger. The only thing worse, is paying for a steak in Ludwick, and getting another greasy burger. If both are mistakes, Parra is easier to stomach.

The need for a LOOGY escapes me, honestly. If a pitcher can't get the hitter out, get a pitcher who can get the hitter out.

Lets not forget Arredondo who is also getting a major league salary, and down in AAA. Funny thing I didn't see him on the 40 man roster though. Is that a mistake by lowly CBS. Or is he actually off the 40 man roster. And what are the Reds going to do if anything with him. And How is Nick Masset doing.

Hmmm. Maybe he cleared waivers. If put on waivers and no one claims, he can be sent down or choose to be a free agent. If no one claims you, why would you want to be a free agent ?

The Reds outrighted Arredondo exposing him to waivers prior to Opening Day. Teams generally outright players when they wish to remove them from the 40 man but want to keep them in the system.

He's been wild in AAA walking almost a batter per inning pitched. Pitched well other than that and had a good spring. I was surprised when he didn't make the team out of spring.

Evidently Heisey will be back with the big club soon.
