I didn't have any hickory or oak, so I hope a little apple and maple smoke will do the trick.

The smoker is at a fairly steady 250F, guess I'll know in another couple of hours if I wasted $75 or not.

Is smoking a standing rib roast popular? Doesn't seem like the right meat for that to me. I did one this year for Christmas and another for Easter. I threw them in my favorite turkey fryer thingy though. Got a perfect crispy crust on the outside, which I hard to do low and slow.

Not hating on your idea at all, both a big hunk of smoked meat, and prime rib sound great right about now. But in my head at least those are two separate cuts of meat and two separate cooking styles.

Never tried this before. But I was reading something about the best prime rib, and several people stated you haven't had great prime rib unless it's been cooked on the smoker...so i had to give it a try.

Once I thought about it, all of the smokehouse type restaurants seem to serve prime rib. I just tend to get brisket, so I never really thought about it. When I googled smoked prime rib, the first thing to pop up is a Bobby Flay recipe. So I guess it can't be a terrible idea.
