He's already at 121 total innings for 2013. His career high is 138 innings. By slowing down his accumulated innings going forward (Although there is no real standard for rookie pitchers, a ceiling of 160-180 innings is a good rule of thumb.), they get more bang for their buck, and a much needed bullpen arm.

assuming Doubrant and Peavy continue to pitch well the Red Sox should put Workman in the pen.

Yeah, that's where Workman is going. When Buchholz comes back they will have to decide whether Dempster or Doubront comes out of the rotation and goes to the pen. There is some speculation that it could be Doubront because of his what his total innings will be at that time. But at this point it's only speculation. He's at 124 now and his season high is 161 (last year). They might have a fexable 180 target for him...

Suffice to say, "when" is the big question, for sure. But he will be back. So... "when" he does come back, some important decisions will have to be made.
