Lions selected Kentucky DE John Paschal with the No. 46 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Despite being heavily recruited, Paschal (6’3/268) opted to go to Kentucky where his older brother played. He redshirted in 2018 after discovering a cancerous melanoma on his left foot and still managed to appear in three games despite going through extensive therapy throughout the season. He landed on NFL Draft radars last year when he racked up 53 tackles, 15.5 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, and an elite 90.0 PFF grade while receiving second-team All-American recognition. He generated pressure from both the inside and outside while suffocating ball carriers with 41 stops (fourth in FBS) and an efficient 9.4 percent missed tackle rate. His rocked-up frame and powerful lower body led to Paschal posting a 37.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-3 broad jump, both 93rd percentile marks, to go with a blazing 1.57 10-yard split which helps contextualize the rapid acceleration of his get off. He thrives when engaging blockers thanks to vice grip-like hands and is dogged in his pursuit of rushers in the backfield. Though he doesn’t possess the raw speed to consistently turn the corner, his instincts and brute strength allow him to push the pocket. A high-character player who is revered by coaches and players alike, Paschal is a versatile edge who shuts down the run and has the frame to put on weight and kick inside.

Regardless. I like these first 3 picks. Really hoping we land a LB at pick 97 and that will be good enough for me. Lots of defense and and true #1 WR when we had arguably the worst WR core in the NFL last year.

regarding Josh Paschal

The character match here is absolutely obvious. Paschal is a three-time captain and a cancer survivor. After multiple surgeries, Paschal had to learn how to walk again.

On the field, he brings a tenacious attitude. Here’s Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops on Paschal:

“The way he empties his tank, the way he goes about his business, the way he impacts players, he leads, he is so selfless, he has overcome so much. Plays and empties his tank every day, one of the most special players if not the most, I’ve ever coached.”
Paschal’s fit on the field is a little less obvious. He’s got positional versatility to slide inside in subpackages and work the ends in base. He also has some experience playing linebacker.

I'm not now nor have I ever been a fan of Chris Simms, but I couldn't help posting his tweet

Paschal eases the hopeful return to form of Romeo Okwara. This pick also pushes Austin Bryant to show up or GTFO.

I love building the D-Line and hope Holmes continues on day 3 with a quick penetrating DT that has some pass rush, however, just as important that player being extremely stout against the run.

Holmes must believe Joseph has the ability to transition to some Strong Safety reps

Cross surely fit that shallow zone type box players, but neither of those two are truly to be trusted in the deep field alone. Cross has some skills to succeed closer to the L.O.S.

60+ picks until Lions are up again

I know, right. Sucks

Good gawd, I was so scared to death Holmes would draft LB Damone Clark at No.97. If Clark lasts until no.177, I could see the risk reward, I guess. He wasn't a favorite of mine, but they sure have talked him up quite a bit.

I feel a lot better Holmes drafting a Safety even though Joseph is more FS at this time and yet completely raw when it comes to route recognition, and where his eyes should be. He's still learning due to limited starts, He has played in games prior to his senior season, but he did not have a lot of snaps prior to this season.

I sure as hell hope they don't plan on TW lll playing more in the box/slot. We've seen that movie already.

Well, since we're being gracious, if they want to take a TE tomorrow, knock themselves out.

Kerby Joseph total snaps by year

2021 719
2020 69 covid year
2019 219

2021 snaps
Deep 330
Slot 64
Box 164
L.O.S. 41

The rap on Joseph is that he's ideally suited for split safety looks as he can easily transition from off-coverage, fluid hips, can change directions on the fly, but he's not considered to have explosiveness. He's a quarters safety which is good, but that spells more box/slot/LOS for TW lll unless this kid makes that jump and soon.

And here you have Holmes' take on this year's QB class

After Day 2 was over, Lions general manager Brad Holmes was asked if he was surprised to see teams avoiding this year’s quarterback class, and he had to pause for a second to make sure he wasn’t being insulting.

“I looked at the quarterbacks and I thought that they were taken where we thought they should have been taken, at least from our standpoint,” Holmes said. “I didn’t see it as they were being mistreated or not being taken fairly. I just think they were evaluated properly.”

To translate into less coded language: Brad Holmes did not like this year’s quarterback. And given that he did plenty of research on this year’s class, it’s more than fair to trust his judgment—especially when it seems all of the NFL evaluators across the league felt similarly.
