Harrison will pitch in Sac this weekend and per FZ is "very close" to a debut. Giants had planned to have him in SF in July but his injury pushed him back a little bit.

This, more than anything else I believe, is why they didn't get Lorenzen or Cease.

And that is stupid. Lorenzen would be perfect. We need a #3 with some MLB experience in the playoffs. Maybe Harrison is like Bumgarner in 2010 but it's not the way to bet is it.

Of course not, but we likely had to give up Harrison in the deal.

Jesus H, Pollock is so bad. What the heck?

I asked this in the other thread, who was the best bat that moved this deadline? Who was 2nd best? Could we have maybe gotten them instead?

No particular order:

Candalario
Burger
Choi
Pham
Canha
Bell
Cooper
DeJong
Hedges
Pollock
Lopez

I don't know...Candalario moves the needle but not really anybody else is a clear upgrade.

Baggs, tonight:

By standing nearly still, the Giants did not lose much ground. The Arizona Diamondbacksadded closer Paul Sewald and outfielder Tommy Pham while also rescuing infielder Jace Peterson from Oakland. The Dodgers reintroduced themselves to infielder Kiké Hernandez while adding infielder Amed Rosario and right-hander Lance Lynn — three players with underlying attributes who are nevertheless in the midst of underwhelming to miserable seasons. The Padres acquired 43-year-old curveball artist Rich Hill and bench bat Ji-Man Choi. As for the rest of the wild-card field, the Marlins acquired a back-end bullpen arm, David Robertson, and added some punch (and punchouts) with Jake Burger and Josh Bell. The Phillies acquired pitcher Michael Lorenzen, a No.4 starter who has already surpassed his career high for innings. The Brewers picked up outfielder Mark Canha and left-hander Andrew Chafin.

There are some useful complementary names in the above paragraph. There are no day-to-day difference-makers.

Look at every trade that got made and please tell me which one the Giants should have done. There were very few, if any, in my view.In some ways this is a nice vote of confidence in young players such as Matos, Luciano, Schmitt, Beck, Harrison, and Winn.

You may be right here. It does seem the main impact players that moved were pitchers, and that's our strength and they clearly are leaning into the bullpen centric model.

But were any of the bats that moved good fits for us and could we have gotten them? Genuinely curious, is there a list somewhere?

I hear you, but I think it just depends upon return. If we get a piece that can't make the current ML roster, THEN I think we're doing it wrong.
Seems like we are doing it wrong (Pollock doesn't belong on an ML roster anymore).

BTW

the trade is officially Pollock and Mathias for a PTBNL.
Why the heck did FZ pull this trade? I don't care if the PTBNL is cash, this one is absolutely ridiculous. Mathias could be had on the waiver wire at least a couple times in the past year. Pollock, as other have pointed out, is horrible.

I wonder what DiPoto has on FZ that he pulls out ocassionally to make him do stupid trades with Seattle?

The Pollock move is inexplicable but also harmless as long as he's sent down when their injured OFs get back (Yaz, Haniger, etc)

Didn't Bumgarner look better in 2010, before his call up? Harrison's control is a bit worrying (maybe magnified in my mind with so many of the other rookies turning into pumpkins this year, at least the big ones).

Yes he did, that's my point. If they are thinking he's another 2010 Bumgarner I think they're mistaken
