Giants also optioned Black today and recalled Avila.

Apparently, they are going to skip Black's turn in the rotation with Thursday's off day and hope that Snell will be ready for the next turn. I guess that they don't have much faith in Black right now.
Why would they? He only put up 4 solid innings in Colorado before getting tattooed in the fifth…. IN COLORADO!!

So they should send him down and put him on a strict pitch limit. That will train him to go deeper.

Pitch limit? no.

Send him down? yes
But they have had him on limited work all season, then they exceed that when he got called up. The comment was not pure snark. It is based on truth.

I'm not sure that's true. I'd bet they're trying to get him to be more efficient to go deeper into games.

Roku will start streaming MLB games for free. Now we will have another option of watching the Giants lose.

Per Giants, Jung Hoo Lee’s MRI revealed structural damage to his left shoulder. He will seek a second opinion with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Thursday. Giants will have another update after that.

TLDR: He's out for the year.

That stinks. While I wasn't as high on him as most were on here and didn't think he was going to make that big of a contribution, he is young and the Giants have invested a lot in him. Hopefully, he comes out better in 2025.

Villar is the only healthy 40 man position player not on the active roster now.
And he should have come up instead of Lucy, imho. But I know nothing, and that opinion is not intended as a critique of the FO.

Here is a question I’ve never even considered until now. With a Giant a day going on the IL, what happens if they hit a spot where every possible player on the 40 man roster is either active or on the IL. If they get to the point where they need to add a player to the active roster and none of the 7, 10, 15 day IL players need to be moved to the 60 day IL, how do they make room for another player on the 40 man roster? They cannot dfa a player on the IL, so do they just release an injured player? Do they go a player short for a bit? Do they move someone mariginal to the 60 day IL, knowing that they may have to keep him on the IL likely longer than needed?
I realize that this likely won’t happen but the trajectory brings this scenario close enough for me to ponder it.

I'd imagine they'd get special permission from the Commissioner to expand to 41 or 42 players -- an injury exception if you will.

The Giants are 3 players from testing this out as they will only have Roupp, Teng and Villar left, assuming Black replaces Winn

I doubt they would get any exemptions, except maybe in regards to adding a more minor injury to the 60. In fact, I am not certain of the restrictions teams face in adding players to the 60. Is there a centralized medical team that approves such roster moves?

I doubt it. I would think teams would have sufficient motivation to only put players who are going to be out of action for at least 60 days on there. For players that they want back, they are going to be hesitant to put them out of action longer than needed and for guys on the tail end of their 40 man roster, they aren't going to want to pay them for that much service time.
