Computer question?

How the heck do I get rid of the avast antivirus thing on my computer. It keeps saying it needs an update. When I try to update it the thing gets stuck at the initializing part. Which is the first step. When I tried to get rid of it by opening up the control panel it wouldn't let me. Then I thought I could just replace it so I went to the website & tried to download the new free antivirus thing. It went through the whole thing, but at the end it wouldn't work.

Yes I'm an idiot when it comes to computers. PLEASE HELP!!

My knowledge of computers is very limited but it seems to me like something is not working properly. I would suggest starting a thread and see if any of the posters have any idea as to what the problem might be.

In my control panel I don't have an Uninstall program. I have a Change/Remove deal. When I hit the Change/Remove to get rid of it, it won't let me. It says Error reading product data from C program files. Setup cannot continue.

How do I put my computer in safe mode?

reboot it and as it's rebooting press F8 key until boot menu comes up.
Select Safe Mode and proceed.
