Clinton Portis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The trade of Clinton Portis to Washington for Champ Bailey - was one of the best Bronco trades of all time. Not because Portis didn't perform well in Washington (about 1.5 yards less per carry than in Denver) - its that Champ's career lasted about 6 years longer - and he made many more all-pro teams.

I was thinking about this just now - because Portis ran in the Kubiak offense. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry over two seasons and scored a lot of TDs. The Bronco career of Clinton Portis was a beauty to behold - he was all three - quick, fast and elusive.

I don't think it is too far out of the question that CJ Anderson can have the kind of season (comparable) to the ones that Portis had in Denver. Due to his speed - Portis was clearly the better RB in this prime (IMO). CJ is quick and elusive - and fast enough. Both backs catch the ball pretty well - Anderson is a better blocker and he has more raw power for yards after contact. Portis had one of the great Bronco FBs in Mike Anderson. This makes Jano an important piece. Ruben Droughns replaced Clinton Portis as the Starter in Kubiak's offense in 2004 - he ran for 1240 yards - and had a 4.5 yard average. If Ruben D. had had Portis' average yard per carry - he also would have gone over 1,500 yards.

In Clinton Portis' last season as a Bronco - the starting Oline was Matt Lepsis - Cooper Carlise - Nalen - Dan Neil and George Foster. Lepsis was a better than average LT - Carlise - Nalen and Neil - were undersized, but mobile guys with Nalen being the all time Bronco center. Neil was very dependable and Foster got a lot of criticism for not being as good as everyone thought he was going to be. This 2003 online is maybe a litter better or on a par with the current group, but the 2003 oline played together for a lot of years and were in sync.

I'm expecting sometime during the regular season - barring a rash of injuries - the Broncos will have a very successful run game -which sets up everything in the Kubiak offense.

Don't leave out the fact that it also netted us Tatum Bell. :)

Here is CJ's stats:

C. J. Anderson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Career 4.8 per rush (bad offensive lines) - about 30 pass receptions on average too. At 250 carries CJ gains 1,200 yard - 300 carriers - 1,475.

CJ may turn out to be a very good investment.
