The latest piece to Dean Lombardi’s summer-long science project appears to be done. A source close to the situation has confirmed to MayorsManor that the Kings and forward Kyle Clifford have agreed upon a new contract.

With the return of the 22-year old left wing, the Kings would have a trio of toughness, as he will be part of a roster that already includes Jordan Nolan and the recently acquired Dan Carcillo.

Clifford’s new contract will be for two years, similar to most of the other deals Lombardi has drawn up with his Restricted Free Agents this summer.

I just posted this in the Carcillo thread, but looks like it's all done.

So who gets traded/sent down or Mitchell retires?

Mitchell won't retire unless he wants to screw the team over. He would go on LTIR if worse comes to worse but it seems like he should be good to go by the start of the season.

If thats the case, looks like Muzzin, Martinez, Ellerby and Shultz will be fighting out for the 6th spot next to Greene.

I think that spot will come down to Muzzin or Martinez and Ellerby and Shultz will likely be the 7th defenseman.

Really hard to say who will get traded but Muzzin and Martinez should have the most value.

It's a foregone conclusion that either Muffin or Martinez will be dealt.

Mr. Gambler AKA Foxy said he would sign for $2.25, I said $2.75. Both were way off mark but he was closer than I was so he wins.

Anybody know the cap situation now? They've got to be close to the limit if not over it. That'll determine when or if any trades are made. If they're over the cap they'll have to do something by the start of the season (I think) but if they are just close that's gives Lombardi some time to make a better deal and have a better idea of who's expendable after training camp.

We are only 86 thousand over the limit. we have 24 players on the roster atm. 13 Fowards, 9 Defenseman, 2 goalies.

One defenseman will be gone for sure. Either traded or sent down/claimed on waivers.

We can carry 8 d man and 13 forwards but if they want to carry 14 F and 7 D another defenseman will have to be moved.

Don't have any wiggle room for any possible trade deadline moves though. They'll have to move some salary to do anything much.

Not necessarily - the way the cap system is designed is as the season goes along and salaries are absorbed, more space opens up. This is why you see a guy like Iginla making $6 million (or whatever it is for example) cannot be acquired in November but is more easily acquired in March. He is essentially a $2.5 million player at that point.

The Kings are going to have to make a move before the season starts just to get cap compliant, and who knows, someone else may be moved as the season goes along to make even more room for a deadline splash.

Right now someone for sure is gone. No way they can enter the season like this from a financial and roster point of view.

Per Capgeek, that isn't even counting Toffoli. Even with Toffoli starting in Manchester, DL still has to shed a player.

Foxy wasn't that far off...

2.25 vs. the 2.15 he got...pretty damn good guess, I'd say.

I thought $1.75, so I met you in the middle at $2.25 to set the bar. But yeah, even lower than what I had thought!

Pretty sure we were talking annual salary, not total compensation. At least that was my understanding, in which case we both missed by a mile.

I don't know the details about the negotiation, but that seems awful low to me even for Clifford's standards.

I think he and Dumbo agreed to a 2 year so he could go a) get a big increase in 2 years, when he is 1 year away from UFA (if his play warrants it) and b) if he can't get a big payday, he files for arbitration and gets a good deal (if his play warrants it).

Looks like a win-win to me, Dumbo now, Clifford possibly later.
