I am more excited than he is about this, although he doesn't know what he's getting yet.

Here's a 20 gauge same model. Mossberg 500 Super Bantam Camo.

I'd say that's fucking awesome......so long as he's as interested in that stuff as you are! :D

If he's not, don't be pushing that on him.....

Oh he wants it. He held it last week, but I have him convinced he is getting a rod and reel.

Think so? I was a veteran hunter at the same age. Maybe it is a regional thing. He's more into hunting than baseball or football anyway, so I figure we do what he really wants to do.

I can't wait to go. But there's skeet to shoot in a few weeks when the WMA opens back up. As for the bow and arrows, I don't know jack. Will be a learning process for both of us. Bow season begins September, so maybe by then, we will be able to hit something.

I didn't get my 20 guage until I was 12.

My boy who'll be turning 9 this year will get a single shot .410 that my grandpa was given as a kid from my great grandpa. My gramps passed it to my dad who passed it to me.

At this point my boy only owns a bb gun, a pellet gun, and has only shot my .22 long rifle a few times.

Per tradition, I'll give my boy a nice gun cleaning kit for his B-day and let him wonder why he got it when he opens the wrapping paper. I'll walk him over to the gun cabinet soon after and officially pass the .410. It's the way my dad passed it to me and the way it was passed to him some 60 years ago..

Pretty sweet tradition. Opinions vary between .410 and 20ga at this age. Size of the kid is a big indicator of what they should shoot, regardless of age, although maturity plays well into whether or not they should have a gun at all. I was small at 7 and 8 but got a size burst around 9 and I guess my dad was tired of me missing, so bumped me up to my moms 20ga SS. Nailed 2 dove right off the bat with it. And it didn't seem to kick any worse, probably because it was a good deal heavier.

We might give it a shot. For the time being, though, I need to get a recoil pad. They didn't have one yesterday when I bought the gun. But he's already pestering me to shoot, so something has to happen today.
