All in the Family is a great example. A good theme song always makes you want to hurry up, finish what you're getting from the kitchen, and get your ass to the living room (or wherever) to catch the show.
It seems like all the old shows had great theme songs?
I was thinking about that myself. Yeah, once upon a time they devoted more time to opening sequences. I don't think we'll ever really see that again. Most shows I see now, they just pretty much get right into it. Very little buildup beforehand.
