Seems like a lot of money for a starting pitcher that's thrown 508.2 innings since getting called up in 2015 and has yet to throw more than 130 in a season.

This is the way baseball and professional sports are going though. Money is going up considerably

Seems they are going the risk/reward route and banking on the upside. Guess they feel if he ever becomes a near 200 inning starter, the team is getting the better of this deal

Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston reports that Lance McCullers has agreed to a five-year, $85 million contract extension with the Astros.

Berman was first to report the years, and several other outlets have reported the dollar amount. McCullers had been set for free agency after this season but now will be tied to the Astros through the 2026 campaign. It's a lot to invest in a guy who hasn't shown much durability. He's never made more than 22 starts in a major league season or thrown more than 157 2/3 innings in a year between the majors and minors. However, he is just 27, misses bats and gets grounders, so the appeal is obvious if he's able to stay on the mound.

I don’t get it unless they are so flush with cash they don’t care about that much money going to someone with as suspect a long term profile as McCullers. The upside is apparent, but you gotta wonder about the floor?

Seems like a crazy amount of money(and years) for a guy that can’t seem to stay healthy. I guess they are figuring he has a massive year between now and free agency and then he’s worthy of a Wheeler or Corbin-type deal? I guess they are protected from that now....

Oh, no question. $85M in today's game is nothing like $85M in, say, 2007. Or 1999. I still think its a lot for someone with serious durability issues.

I think Corbin is a superior pitcher even assuming McCullers is healthy.
