So - the best the Giants can do is a 3-3 homestand - that's one game under my projection. And had the bats shown up, it could have been 6-0.

Not to beat a dead appendix, but sans Torres no way the 'bats' get us to 6-0

I think the point I was making was the pitching has been damn good, so far. As for Torres making a difference, maybe.

Torres since Aug 1 : .231/.276/.408

Precisely. Since Torres started slumping a couple of weeks ago and then left completely (slump = pre-appendix problems?), our offense has tanked.

The damn good pitching is the only reason we are still in it.

Torres loss could be the factor that costs us the playoffs. Injuries matter. Look at Colorado: Tulo back, hello hottest team in NL. Except the Phils, who also got healthy and then went on their tear.

I hate to give credit where credit is due, but Sabean's and Bochey's closed door meeting with the pitchers seems to have done the trick...

I think blaming everything on torres' appendix is just too simple of an explanation for my tastes. The atbats these guys have taken on this stand have been horrendous. Let's look at some numbers: to date, but excluding September, the offense has averaged 4.44 runs/game, in Torres' August slump the offense scored 4.43 runs/game. He's an important cog on this team, no doubt. But the offense does not live and die with Torres.

Here's a month by month breakdown on what Torres means to the offense:

Month.............Torres OPS......Runs/game
April/March.........0.696.........4.59
May.................0.957.........3.89
June................0.737 ........4.00
July................1.027.........5.32
August..............0.824.........4.43

Bottom line: having Torres out hurts the team no doubt, but the offensive anemia that has befallen the Giants goes much deeper than Torres.
