• Patriots offensive tackle Calvin Anderson survived malaria in 2023

After a full season in which Anderson appeared in five games, we now know why he was late to start practicing with his team.

According to the Boston Globe's Christopher Price, Anderson was battling malaria, a life-threatening disease caused by parasites from mosquitos.

Just days before he was supposed to begin training camp with the Patriots, "Anderson was laid out in the emergency room at Newton-Wellesley Hospital with a 105-degree fever and 50-50 odds on whether he was going to live or die."

After an incredibly scary situation, Anderson battled back and played important snaps for New England in their 4-13 season.

Heading into 2024, the Patriots recently restructured his deal, which makes him a virtual lock to make the roster, as his release would cost the team $2.31 million in dead cap while saving just $300,000.

Anderson is fully healthy and ready to compete for a swing tackle spot in New England this coming year, but with no starter in place on the left side, there's a chance that he shows up and takes ahold of that job and never looks back.

Just received a video from a friend.

Patriots have an UDFA from Samford University who not much is known. My friend says that this guy was in his top 50 WRs of 2024.

He says that he believes that this guy will turn heads and will easily push TT and JuJu out before the 3rd preseason game.

If nothing else, I'll be watching to see if this guy gets any playing time.

Appears that yesterday was meeting, mandatory films and lectures and no football on the field.

Media and news barely touched anything to do with the Patriots.

Today, they'll be taking the field and trying to get rid of the dust and cobwebs.

Everyone seems to be more excited about Maye and Baker than Maye and Polk.

7 takeaways from Patriots rookie minicamp with Drake Maye, Joe Milton III​

FOXBOROUGH — The backfields at Gillette Stadium were filled with first-year Patriots players on a breezy Saturday morning as rookie minicamp rolled on.

With no pads and just one semi-competitive period, the only fireworks were literal ones that went off during Bridgewater State’s commencement inside the stadium. However, there was still plenty to glean from the first look at Drake Maye and his new peers.
Here are seven takeaways from minicamp:

1. Both QBs have big arms
Naturally all eyes were on the quarterbacks, and Maye and Joe Milton III are as advertised: They can sling the football.
On Saturday, Maye was certainly the more accurate of the two though, both in individual periods and a 7-on-7 drill. Milton has a cannon, but everything coming out of his hand was a fastball, whether a five-yard slant or a deep ball. Maye completed all but one of his passes in the brief competitive period and gave his wideouts Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker the lion’s share of credit for that.
“They made some plays in 7-on-7,” Maye said. “I threw a couple passes behind them but they still made some nice catches.”
Though Milton is currently sporting a No. 19, he wore a large gold “7″ chain. If JuJu Smith-Schuster is the odd man out in the wide receiver competition this summer, his number might not be on the market for long.
2. QBs have big entourages, too
There’s going to be no shortage of resources for the rookie quarterbacks.
All morning, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo were alongside the signal callers. Ultimately, Jerod Mayo said Van Pelt will be the one taking the reins there.
“Across the league, most offensive coordinators, they interact with the quarterback, the starting quarterback for the most part,” Mayo said. “We do have a group of coaches that have quarterback backgrounds, but I would say overall it would be AVP as far as that lead guy.”
3. Caedan Wallace reps at LT
After quite a bit of speculation that Caedan Wallace would flip to left tackle, the third-rounder was indeed lined up as the blindside protector. Though he played on the right side in Penn State, he said the transition has been going well.
“It’s been good. It’s been cool,” Wallace said. “I’ve been working it throughout the combine and draft prep process. So coming out here and being able to just put on for the coaches has been pretty cool... I don’t find it all too hard to switch over.”
As for the footwork adjustments required in flipping sides, Wallace was unfazed.
“It’s not really a challenge,” Wallace said. “I played a lot of left in college practices, but I’ve pretty much played all left in high school. Being able to work that throughout the years and then come out here, it’s been sort of an easier transition. Not like completely easy, but it’s been a little easier.”
4. Layden Robinson plays LG
Though training camp is still two months away, there could be a competition brewing at left guard. Somewhat surprisingly, the Patriots drafted Layden Robinson with their first pick of Day 3 (No. 103 overall) and he could give incumbent left guard Cole Strange a run for his money this summer. Robinson was repping in that spot on Saturday morning.
5. Mayor Mayo
In a league where head coaches increasingly specialize on one side of the football, Mayo roamed all over the place at rookie minicamp. Whether defensive linemen, quarterbacks or special teamers, Mayo spent time with just about everybody. He doesn’t only want to be a defensive head coach.
“I have been over with the offense more than I have been with the defense,” Mayo said. “And that just goes back to continuing to grow and continuing to learn, like I said in those offensive meetings as well. I am learning right alongside those guys. As far as practice is concerned, I am going to bounce around, offense, defense, special teams. I mean, they all play a huge part in winning football games, but that is the benefit of having a bigger staff, or a larger staff, so I am able to do that.”
6. A new role for Troy Brown
After an offseason of uncertainty, Brown was back out on the practice field. The former wide receivers coach spent some time with the running backs, holding a blocking pad for drills, and is now in a “skills development role.”
7. “Mount Belichick” still in use
Mayo closed practice the same way Bill Belichick used to: By making players run sprints up the hill at the back of the facility. Though plenty has changed, it appears that “Mount Belichick” will remain a part of the program.
