It's way too early, but the newly proposed Salary cap for the 2022 season is out

Sources say next season's cap is expected to reach the $208.2 million maximum agreed upon by the NFL and NFL Players Association in May. The final number has not been officially announced, but it's expected to be revealed at the NFL's annual labor seminar next week.

The salary cap this season is $182.5 million -- down from $198.2 million in 2020, but much higher than it would've been had the league and union not agreed in August 2020 to spread an anticipated multibillion-dollar revenue shortfall from the COVID-19 pandemic over several years.

Trey Flowers can be cut and give us a boost of nearly 10.4M

Vaitai being cut would give another 4.2M, but I'm not so sure that'll be the correct move unless the organization is confident in either Stenberg or Kraemer being able to take over his RG spot.

Surprisingly, Vaitai has played pretty damn well this year with a much-maligned offensive line for the first half of the season. I also read where Vaitai hadn't been charged with giving up a sack prior to the last two games.

I hope the sudden bump in salary cap does not lead to the Lions looking to add a lot of veterans next year. They need to keep going cheap and young. Take flyers on talented players that wash out early. We get a few more like Harris and keep hitting the draft and I think they can build a solid foundation.

15 if they cut post June 1st for Flowers, but then we owe another 6 the following year.

Vaitai will never play up to his contract, but he is the best option we have at EG right now, so I say run with him for now.

Lions 2022 UFA is a fairly long list in my opinion and mostly due to lack of talent. However, there are a handful of players that I believe they should re-sign and not in order of preference.

S- TW lll
Edge - Charles Harris................. so long as they can get him relatively inexpensively
P - Jack Fox
OL - Tommy Kraemer
FB - Jason Cabinda
C - Evan Brown............................. as he's more than held down the C spot since Ragnow has been injured
LS - Scott Daly
TE - Brock Wright
LB - Anthony Pittman
LB - JRM............. you cannot deny his ST play and at a minimum his ability to play LB in an emergency even though his play has been erratic
LB - Alex Anzalone

I see no reason to float any additional monies from Flowers contract towards the 2023 season. I'd rather they eat that entire dead-cap in 2022 so they can have that extra money to possibly sign a better UFA in 2023, if needed.

I'm with your train of thought regarding 2022 season in that they lather, rinse, repeat what they did this past off-season. They can wait and see how 2020, 2021 and 2022 draftees' play before signing any Tier 1 or even Tier 2 UFA prior to the 2023 season.

I was just typing this up myself! I agree with all of these except Anzalone, I would rather Resign Dion-Hamilton, I would like to see what he could do when healthy.

Fox, Brown, Harris, Walker, and Cabinda are the most critical I think.

Draft pool will cost the Lions nearly 11.6M

Another 6-8M will be needed for IR player replacement

And finally, the Practice Squad will require another 2.5M for the season, however not including any ridiculous signing bonuses. 9k per player, per week for 18 weeks, for each Practice Squad Player.

Those totals of 11.6M + 8M + 2.5M = 23.1M come right off the top of the original almost 40M while not inclusive of the possible cuts made

The Lions had 8M in reserve for the 2021 season IR replacements and previous regimes held back 5-8M

I could see the Shaun Dion Hamilton signing, but for whatever reason this staff has been mostly positive regarding Anzalone this season and I'm not sure as to why. I've mentioned numerous times that it is my belief that they'll attempt to re-sign Anzalone and it was strictly based how they've talked about him to the local sports media outlets.

What I don't want to see if this staff going into the draft pinned down. I think they're intelligent enough not to do that but stranger actions have occurred with some of their moves.

Also, I believe there is currently almost 2.5M left this year, but we'll have to wait and see what incentives earned payouts are going to cost for performance bonuses that will count against the 2022 cap.

I love that Jacobs has 2 more years after this one. He has been a very nice find

Even AJ Parker as well. Jacobs has more than outperformed expectations, but Parker has also been a pleasant surprise even though both have had their share of inconsistent play at times.

I'm expecting Jacobs to take over as CB1 next season no matter what comes about with Okudah's injury.

Jacobs did get the benefit of not having to face Jefferson, although I think he would have had to have been better than Amani was.

They are relatively few NFL CB capable of shutting down Jefferson or even Ja' Marr Chase

Whenever the LIONS acquire a reliable NFL QB that has the physical AND mental make-up to get the ball to any of those players, you can count me in.

I know you're messing with me, but still my point and response stands as is.
But you got me.

All three of those guys are desperate to receive check downs.
