Yeah, definitely sucks. :L

I feel for the kid, getting hurt in the first game makes it that much worse. We had a couple injuries, but nothing season ending thank god. Jarrick Williams broke his foot (and played on it) and is out 4 weeks, DeAndrew White separated his shoulder and is out 2 weeks or so.

He was also a walk-on so that makes it extra crappy. Sucks about your guys, pretty crazzy he still played on a broke foot.

Williams relishes move from student section to field

Brent Hubbs

Tuesday cornerback Michael Williams was still hoarse from Tennessee's 38-7 win over Utah State.

The native of Laurel, Md., a Washington, D.C., suburb, had been hoarse from games before, but it was from sitting in section H of the student section.

Sunday night it was from his part in helping the Vols to a 1-0 start.

"It was great. The first series I had some butterflies, I'm not going to lie to you. But I was amped the whole game. I lost my voice a little bit. I was out there yelling," said the smaller Williams, a high school All-American in track at powerhouse DeMatha Catholic. "I had a great time and I'm excited for this weekend against Arkansas State."

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound Williams was credited with one tackle on the night and it was the contact that helped him settled into to being a football player.

"The second series," Williams said of when he settled down. "The first series I was a little too fast with my back pedal; after that I calmed down. I got my first little tackle and I was pretty calm after that.

"Get the first little hit in. Get your pads a little loud. That was my first little key to getting settled down."

But that doesn't mean Williams didn't have a moment where he reflected on the journey from the stands to the sidelines.

"It was kind of awkward," Williams said smiling. "I was looking to the student section and I remember being up there cheering the team on. I was actually on the field. It was exciting. I'm just ready to keep playing and prepare for Arkansas State.

"It's what I imagined. I have been waiting for this along time now. When I got the opportunity, I took it all in. I took it all in and I was ready to play ball and contribute to the defense."

Overall, Williams felt like he played pretty well. He quickly acknowledged the need to continue to develop from week one to week two, but was played with his consistency from an assignment standpoint, a key in him winning the job for the season opener.

"I felt like I was on my assignments pretty well. I had some minor things, but they weren't too big. There weren't any blown coverages or anything like that. I just want to build upon last week for this game and get better."

Saturday afternoon, Williams expects some butterflies from the excitement of getting to play, but also admitted that emotionally this week will be easier than last.

"Emotionally, yes. I'm used to the stadium, the crowd and the atmosphere," he said. "Now, it's going to be about having fun and making plays.

"It was an exciting experience. I thank God for the opportunity. I enjoyed every minute of it and I'm just ready to get back into Neyland this weekend."

POOR TECHNIQUE

Senior Justin Coleman, who head coach Butch Jones praised last week for how good of a camp he had, gave up a 37-yard touchdown pass Sunday night preventing the defense from pitching the shutout. After the play in which Coleman was also flagged for holding, the Brunswick, Ga., native was visibly disgusted. Tuesday, the veteran Coleman called the play the result of a lack of preparation.

"Everything came down to technique," Coleman said. "At the beginning of the game I had bad technique. It kind of exposed me. I had bad technique during the play. It was something that I wasn't working on during warm ups. It's something I should have been working on and it showed in that play.

"I didn't prepare myself to look back. All I had to do was look back for the ball a lot sooner and I would have been ready for it."

REEVES-MAYBIN EAGER TO BUILD ON NICE START

Tennessee sophomore linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin made the most of his first career start Sunday night as the Clarksville native racked up 10 tackles on the night for the Vols.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound weakside linebacker was all over the field Sunday night for the Vols, but even being the leading tackler for Tennessee on Sunday night didn't keep Reeves-Maybin from some self-critiquing.

"I still don't think I made enough plays," Reeves-Maybin said. "I still feel like I left some plays out there I could have made. I'm happy with it, but there's a lot of stuff I could have done better."

For someone making their first start after seeing mostly time as a special teams specialist in 2013, Reeves-Maybin said he was comfortable early on against Utah State.

"I was pretty comfortable out there," Reeves-Maybin said. "I think we did a good job preparing for them and looking at them all summer so we kind of knew what to expect from them so I was comfortable."

As a whole, Reeves-Maybin felt like his unit played well in only giving up seven points but he admitted they wanted the goose egg on the scoreboard.

"I feel like we did pretty good. I think it would have felt a lot better if we did get that shutout, but overall we played pretty well and we still have a lot of things to improve on," Reeves-Maybin said.

Looking ahead to Arkansas State and quarterback Fredi Knighten, who rushed for 104 yards in the Red Wolves' season-opening win over Montana State, Reeves-Maybin said the key to a stellar defensive effort will once again be containing a dual-threat quarterback.

"They do some of the same things, some of the concepts transfer over, but they run a lot faster offense so we have to be ready for that up-tempo (offense)," Reeves-Maybin said. "Both teams have prolific quarterbacks so we've just got to keep our points on those guys and just be ready to tackle them and get them on the ground."

Coleman agreed that everything the Red Wolves do is built around doing it faster than you want.

"Everything they are doing is just a lot faster paced," Coleman said. "They are trying their best to gas you out."

Tennessee tight end Ethan Wolf and receiver Von Pearson both had scary looking injuries in the Vols' 34-19 win over Arkansas State on Saturday. Luckily, neither was as devastating as they could have been.

According to a source familiar with the injuries, Wolf has a bruised right knee and Pearson a possible sprained left ankle.

The source spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because the injuries have not been officially announced.

It's uncertain if either will miss the Vols' game at No. 4 Oklahoma (2-0) on Saturday (TV: WATE, 8 p.m.). That will be determined this week as the two players go through rehab.

Wolf posted on his Twitter account Sunday afternoon that all of the ligaments in his knee were still in tact.

"Nothing's torn," he said. "Thanks to the Lord."

Both players earned starting jobs at their respective positions in their first year in Division I football. The freshman Wolf has eight receptions for 46 yards in his first two games. Pearson, a junior college transfer in his first season at UT, has seven receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown, helping the Vols to a 2-0 start.

Wolf "questionable", Pearson "out"..

head coach Butch Jones said the news was better than expected when it came to the injury status of tight end Ethan Wolf and wide receiver Von Pearson.

Wolf, who was injured on a pass in the flat in the third quarter of Saturday's win over Arkansas State, tweeted out on Sunday that there was no ligament damage to his right knee.

Jones called Wolf "questionable" for Saturday's game with a knee bruise, and Jones also has said Wolf hyperextended his knee. Jones said his possibility of playing Saturday would depend on how his knee reacts to rehab this week.

Pearson, who Jones said is in good spirits, has been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain and he will not play this week in Norman.

"We hope to get him back very soon," Jones said.

Sounds like Josh Smith will be out a few weeks. Really hope we'll get Pearson back for the UGA game.

IMO we're an O-line away from being a pretty good team. The defense has played well - only allowing one TD in the second half against OU - and our WR's are some of the best in the country - North, Pearson, Howard, Malone, etc. Have talent at RB as well with Lane and Hurd.
