if it were structured for 6 years at $5 mill per year, i'd agree, but it's not.

the first 3.5 years at for a little over $9 million is awesome.

if he doesn't pan out, it becomes impossible to trade him in the final 2 years of the contract, where the real money ($20 million guaranteed) is.

i'm so desperate for an outfield uprgrade, i'm not even against this. and if this were a front office willing to gamble payroll and spend more if it didn't pan out, i'd be cheering away for it.

anyhoo, as I said, I certainly see why the pirates would have no problems unloading him a few months after signing the contract.

It said the last two years is team option so you simply cut him. The average still works if you budget right. Just sign others for more upfront and less in the back end of the deals and it still keeps you on budget.

would you be happy with marte and millone being our upgrades?

given our GM, yeah.

maybe he'll pull something better out, though. trying to be optimistic.

Heard Mets trying hard to move Bartolo Colon, which isn’t exactly a surprise. Also no surprise: Dodgers trying hard to move Kemp.

No Kemp. He looks like he has given up.

off the juice.........body breaking down cause of said juice

the last 2 years of the contract are for 2018/2019, for which he's owed $17.5 million. to "cut him" at any point automatically adds an additional $3 million buyout for the 2020/2021 options. so yeah, $20 million after the first 3.5 years of his contract, guaranteed.

if he doesn't pan out, he becomes untradable. there's no way around that.

if this tight ass front office cuts him and eats that money, the effect is obvious.

this cannot be broken down anymore barney style.

as i said twice now, i'm not against it, but it's very risky given the way our ownership and front office work. if it were an ownership group and front office that invests revenue back into the team every year like so many successful teams, then i wouldn't be saying any of this.

Maybe my math is a little rusty, but 6 years at $31M is the same no matter how you divvy it out. Whether it is equal throughout the 6 years, front loaded, or backend loaded. The last two years I referred to are the 2020 and 2021 years which are team options so contract remains 6/$31.

So it ends up being what it ends up being. Budget for it.

It's kind of weird seeing an otherwise rational poster argue that a contract's structure is meaningless in a trade decision.

Looking at his numbers I'd wager that he'd be worth it no matter what. I just don't trust this front office making good decisions for the team if they're paying somebody $21.5 million over 2 years whose performance doesn't merit that kind of money.

my bad. it's $20.5 million he'd be guaranteed for the final 2 years of the contract.

here it is for those who didn't click the link.

2014: $500,000
2015: $1,000,000
2016: $3,000,000
2017: $5,000,000
2018: $7,500,000
2019: $10,000,000
TEAM OPTION 2020: $11.5M Team Option, ($2M Buyout)
TEAM OPTION 2021: $12.5M Team Option, ($1M Buyout)

i'd be happy with it, just to be clear. lol.

plus, if we were ever lucky enough for this to happen, they'd probably eat some salary for a good player(s) in return.

No no not the M's. Tulos name was mentioned during the all star game as an interesting player that could move. No links to the M's. Im just throwing cargos name out there since Colorado is dead on the year already.

Tulo to Seattle has been mentioned in speculation, just like Kemp. I don't think there are any serious talks going on, but it would be a possibility if Tulo were to be on the market.

I was talking to some people on the Phils board.

One of them said that Byrd wouldn't be enough to get Franklin.

Just curious what you all make of that.

If the player is worth the overall money, structure is not that important. Heck, M's could go to Felix or Cano and say, "Could we pay you more these next few years and less in years 2018 & 2019. Same money, just restructured". With that, you are back on the same yearly payment program. Not that stuff to understand and teams do it all the time. Bobby Bonilla is still getting paid by the Mets...extreme example.

It was reported they wanted Guerrero. No mention of Franklin in that deal.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mariners are among the teams interested in Casey McGehee.
McGehee has played his way into being a nice trade chip for the Marlins, batting .322 with 56 RBI. The Mariners are intent on finding a right-handed bat but have mostly been looking at outfielders. McGehee has played just one game in the outfield as a pro, but he could be used in the DH spot, with Corey Hart shifting to the outfield. Jul 22 - 7:44 PM

Tampa is red hot right now and closed to 5.5 games out of the wildcard. They may not be sellers after all
