Really? Thanks for info. I know nothing about the guy.

I only know him because he's one of the guys in a lot of those NFL Network's Top 10s

He's been working for the Houston Chronicle for 33 years and I guess he has a radio show that plays in Houston and Nashville.

Which is why the team he's most likely to get information from and one that's pursued him the hardest is the Titans.

Again, other teams had comparable or less talent but got more out of them in crucial situations. Some of that is coaching. With our D and STs, we didn't have to force the issue. I don't believe the playcalling would have been nearly as conservative if the staff genuinely had faith in our QB to get it done play in and play out, though.

There's no way you convince me that Harbaugh was playing it safe just because he's conservative by nature. He'd be more than happy to run up the score when the chance arises. And we regularly called big plays, we just didn't connect on them. That's not always Smith's fault. Davis in particular dropped at least two long balls that were put right in his hands. But far more often Smith didn't pull the trigger or missed his man. With a more effective QB, I bet we'd see a much more aggressive game plan.

Because I know you are a fair poster, I'm not talking about you specifically. I think we will see a more aggressive game plan this year with Smith because everyone knows the offense better and players naturally get better until they peak. My point is that we need to see Smith with added progressions/regressions + cap room to sign others vs. Manning at 2012 with who we'll likely get. I think it's a pretty easy choice, but everyone keeps saying "we can't go on with a QB that xxx and ooo's" when those X and Os likely get better. Yes, he could regress, but I think it's unlikely. Just my opinion. We signed Moss and Manningham and Crabtree's older in a more familiar system. There's a liklihood that we are not comparing Manning 2010 with Smith 2011. I think Manning 2012 >>> Smith 2012, but the dramatics are a bit strained for some- again, not for you because I know you a little bit better than I know others (but still very little).

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Manning still has not informed any of the three teams when to expect a decision, according to sources.

Some of those who have pursued Manning the hardest believe he's head to San Francisco. If so, congrats to the 49ers.

if we got manning, time to go for broke the next 3 years.

bring in burress and donnie avery
resign ginn to return kicks if possible
sign gallery
bring in another running back like tolbert or cadilac
bring back franklin and sign wimbley to be situational guys
resign smith to be our waterboy

trade up with a 3rd, maybe next years 3rd too to get ahead of houston
hopefully walk away with konz and dwayne allen in the 2nd. if allen is gone bentley should be there for depth at corner

staley, iupati, konz, gallery, davis should be able to protect our investment. tolbert (hope he didn't sign anywhere yet), would be huge in short yardage. we'd have a good mix of downfield threats and red zone targets. i think donnie avery would beat out crabtree in camp and he's a speedy/shifty guy that seems to do well with manning.

I think we're good right now. There are plenty of WR's we can add to through the draft that would be better options IMO.

Interesting thing is we don't need one now in the draft. We now have the option of doing a lot of different things with our 1st round pick. I'm actually hoping for Cordy Glenn now to further improve our Oline. Then again we could still go for a WR. Now that teams can not look at us and think for sure we are taking one there is a less chance of someone trading ahead of us to grab one.

Our front office has so far done a great job this offseason with or without Peyton Manning.

The only way they can screw this up is if Peyton signs elsewhere and Alex decides not to sign at all. If that happens then this just become a horrible off-season.

I'm not suggesting we use a 1st on a WR. We could go WR in the 2nd, 3rd, or even later.

I'm not either. I'm just staying it's still an option, but it's not a glaring one anymore. We are now in a position where we really can take the best player on the board. We are also in a spot where it will be really hard for teams to predict where we will go in an attempt to trade ahead of us.

I still believe we MUST draft the following:

DE, RG, RB, C, WR, FS

The drafting of the RB, DE, C, and FS is as heir apparents to Goodson, gore, Justin, and Badwin respectively. The drafting of a RG is a MUST within the first three rounds if we don't pick one up in FA. WR I envision we would draft to groom into Moss' role.

I agree, in part, disagree to extent. We still have Moss (which one up in the air), Manningham may be an upgrade, and Crabtree may know the system better. I can't say Kaep will do well or fail or that we won't get someone else, but Alex and Kaep in an honest competition is better than just Kaep. (Assuming that we don't get Manning.) That would possibly/probably outweigh the additions.

It's far from a done deal, so don't go looking for a bridge to jump off of. Yet.

Read this on another message board by some guy:

I can only imagine...
Peyton: I've been so busy honey I forgot to get you a gift.
Ashley: Remember when you put this ring on my finger?
Peyton: (gulps) Yea.
Ashley: Can I see yours again?
Peyton holds up his SB ring.
Ashley: Which one is prettier?
Peyton begins to sweat...
Peyton: Um, you know, I think we picked your ring out together honey. Didn't we?
Ashley: I just LOVE being back home here in Tennessee...
Peyton checks his texts from Harbaugh.
Peyton: Yea honey, it's real good here.
Ashley: You know, I was thinking another ring would be nice as a gift... but this ring is enough (looks at wedding ring) don't you think so Pey pey?
Peyton: (in his head) Oh God.
Ashley: I mean, who needs another ring when we have each other, together, here, home in Tennessee...

(Scene).

Leaves the door open for a decision earlier than Monday/Tuesday. I don't even want to think about the other door it opens. I want this thing done so we can see what we have left to spend. Tolbert is still out there.

McClain also said he wondered what Alex would get on the open market if we signed Manning. JLC hollered at him and said he'd bet Alex would be left scrambling for a 1 year deal for $3-4M with Seattle.
