Correct! 1976 and 1980. Over 40 years ago. I was looking at Blake Snells stats. Both his Cy Young awards he pitched 180 innings. It's a different game.

I just hope we'll see some kind of correction back to at least 90s/00s era starter usage. I sorely miss watching pitchers duels. Not many instances you see dualing starters go 7+ anymore. I hate what bullpen/SP usage has done to MLB in recent years. Get off my lawn.

Unfortunately, I think the game is moving to the “opener”. Having a pitcher go in and throw 150% for 1 or 2 innings is “better” than a pitcher throwing 75% for 5 or 6 innings. This strategy also helps to clamp down the salaries of pitchers.

I don’t like this strategy, but I fear it is inevitable.

Sports evolve over time to maximize winning efficiency no matter how it changes the feel and play on the court/field. In basketball that meant the end of the midrange game in favor of 3 pointers first and foremost with dunks almost as prized. In football it's why it's just a QB/passing driven game now.

Since he's one of the last guys who you can expect/hope to give you 6-7 innings, it makes sense he'd get paid a ton. But as teams move to having only 1-2 (or 0) of them, the net spent on your pitching staff should moderate relative to hitters. Everyone is going to keep making more and more every year but the mix will shift.

I think the number of games employing an opener has actually decreased in 2023 compared to 2022 and 2021. Even Tampa Bay, who are the pioneers of the 'opener', did not employ it in 2023 as often as they had in 2022 and 2021.

I had to look this one up. I've looked at this guy's bb-ref page a few times relevant to the season being referred to and I'm not sure how it's eluded me that he set the record for at bats in a season. As a kid I remember having Willie Wilson's card and knowing him to be the single season holder.
