per twitter and his agent, LaFell has asked for, and will be granted, his release.
It needed to happen. The only chance the offense has at being efficient is for these young guys (Boyd, Ross, Malone, Mixon) to contribute. Only way that happens is to get them reps. We all know the offensive line is gonna struggle, despite what beat writers will tell you.
Releasing LaFell clears the way to get these guys on the field and involved in the passing game. His veteran presence has been overstated anyways.
Besides, pretty sure AJ is the leader of that group. You might have heard of him. He’s pretty good from what I hear. Eifert is also supposedly healthy. It’ll be nice to have a red zone weapon for the 5 games he lasts.
Green - #1, hopefully not aging too quick
Boyd - athletic match ups, slot
Ross - deep threat
Erickson - part time #2 and mostly slot receiver
Malone - supposedly can be the #2
Core - apparently ahead of most of these guys on the depth chart at the moment, so maybe #2 for now.
Tate - there are other college free agents still with us like Tate, I guess you're saying he is better, I take your word for it.
Don't take my word for it on Tate. I am only basing my projection on Hobson's take of mini-camp and training camp. So the opinion is tainted beyond all hell.
If AJ Green gets hurt, this passing game could be historically bad. It will be like the year we rolled out rookies Peter Warrick and Ron Dugans.
Don't get me wrong - LaFell was not needed. And I do think some of the young guys have promise (particularly Boyd and maybe even Ross). But given that Eifert will undoubtedly be injured, it's asking a lot of young guys if their leader goes down.
