But what you fail to mention is that teams like Alabama and Auburn are playing tough opening games year after year, especially Bama since Saban has gotten there.

Since Saban got to Bama they have not played "tough opening games" each year.

2011 they opened w/ Kent St.
2010 they opened w/ San Jose St.
2007 they opened w/ W. Carolina

You're cherry picking.

You left out - Fla. State, W.Virginia ( twice ) Clemson, Meeshigan, Wisconsin, Usc, and this year Louisville.
All were ranked with 3-4 in the top 5.
I'd put those opening games against the entire nation in terms of scheduling and toughness. Btw, He's undefeated at Bama in opening games.

For SEC members, the problem with a nine game conference schedule is that in some years, there are 4 home games and five away. Not going to happen. If you don't get this, some other SEC fan can spell it out for ya.

The solution is as obvious as a clear blue sky - go to a six & fully rotating two schedule. Toss out the artificial "permanent" cross divisional opponent. This would provide for every SEC team playing every other SEC team at least once in a student athlete's 4 years of eligibility. Equitable for athletes, fans, chambers of commerce, every damned body with any concern.

The truth is that there are only two true long-standing rivalries which cross divisions - Auburn-UGA and Alabama-Tennessee. In those years that the SEC does not schedule these rivals, they may elect to play each other utilizing one of their four open slots - essentially an "OOC" game against their traditional cross-division conference rivals.

Given the SEC mandate that one of the four non-conference games be against a P5 opponent, in those years that the conference schedule didn't match them up, Auburn, UGA, Bama, and Tennessee would be playing 10 games against P5 opponents. More power to 'em. The SEC could toss them a bone - in those years where these schools can demonstrate the inability to schedule a B1G, B12-2, ACC, or PAC team for one of their three remaining slots, they may count their "OOC" game against their traditional rival as the requisite P5.
