Zito's Contract

This just occurred to me...

Sabean stated a few years back that Zito's contract does not count towards payroll, and that the team would move forward with that in mind. We have seen the team increase "payroll" over the last few years by approximately 35M, which would fall in line with what he said.

However, here comes the rub...

If what he said is accurate, than wouldn't it also be accurate to expect the "payroll" to go down significantly when his contract is over? If the payroll number is REALLY 105M, and not the 130M that it looks like right now due to Zito, than we may be in for a rude awakening in a couple years...

Or they could just sign Prince Fielder and not count him towards the payroll. Problem solved

I doubt that the Giants will significantly drop payroll...
