And then 11 days until the next game after that? Was Roger Goodell drunk?

It's actually an advantage for the Niners, just like it's an advantage for the Cowboys & Lions to play on Thanksgiving every year.

Depends on who the next team is and how far between locations of play in the Sun/Thurs, Mon/Thurs game. If the Cowboys were playing the worst team in the league the next week, sure they have longer to prepare, but for what? If we were to play the Packers on Sun/Mon night and then the Patriots on Thursday and then the next week play a bad team, that wouldn't be quite an advantage. Add in the fact that the Pats in this hypothetical may be coming off a bye.

But in this situation, yes, it's an advantage because Seattle is easier than Baltimore/Patriots (reg. season) and the previous week is a harder game than the Seahawks - better to play the harder game first. Plus, we're home.

Not true. It actually doesn't matter who the opponent is.

Both teams who play on a short week have equal time to prepare, so there is no advantage for either team in that game. However, both of those teams have more time to prepare the following week. They don't lose anything on the short week, but they both gain time the following week. The opponent doesn't matter.

That's my thinking as well. It sucked for last year's team because of the regime change, but this year it's pretty much a wash. You'd want to play the weaker team on short rest, but then the key is to not lose because of the short week.

There is an advantage for the home team that doesn't have to travel. Travel time will take away rest/practice/film time. Not a ton, but getting players and equipment isn't just like throwing your lunch in a bag and driving to the office. There is an advantage to the home team.

You may have a point there. Although having to travel is disadvantage anyway, it could be a bigger deal on a short week than on a normal one.

Yeah, it effects the preparation. Tougher to gameplan, less film, less rest in general. Like last year going to Baltimore... it was almost set up for the Niners to lose.

That's not really true though because the traveling team always has a disadvantage and loses the travel time. On the short schedule both teams are losing the same amount of corresponding time to if it was a regular scheduled Sunday game.

It really hurt us last year because game planning was key, so having a short week really impacted what we could pull out of the hat. This year it really shouldn't hurt that bad. It all balances out because you actually get an advantage over the next team with the extra rest.

The advantage would be if you are coming off a bye, then play a Thurs game. Then you have the advantage two games in a row.

It matters when one team has to travel across the country to play a complicated team (great team), basically losing a day of practice. They could leave at night to mitigate it and I know the coaches can game plan on the plane. But it's not equal as you say it is the the tune of "it doesn't matter". And the advantage you have to play the next game is minimal if you are playing a bad team the next week.

Example: Choosing regular time to play Average-Great-Bad teams in that order would be better than a short week between the Average-Great games. So it depends on the team no matter how suredly you say that it doesn't. Why would anyone have an advantage in having ~3 days more time preparing for a Manning-less Colts team last year? I agree that more time is better than less time, especially when it comes to rest, but it's so inopportune that it's too minimal to be happy about it.

This year, I think it's advantageous for us. We're home. Seattle is likely better than last year but not more so than Baltimore. Arizona is likely better than St. Louis last year.

As I remember it, the teams use the flight as meeting/film time. Like handing out individually prepared DVDs for each player and for instance all the Defensive linemen sit in a group with their position coach and go over their individual DVDs and what not... same for other positions.

I think I remember Harbaugh talking about this when the 49ers flew to Baltimore for their Thursday Night game last year. Just don't quote me, I can't remember exactly who said they did this.

They were just talking about it on Mike and Mike this morning. Chris Carter and Mike Golic were explaining how these Thursday games are a horrible idea. How players are still sore from Sunday games. And when players are sore already and haven't recovered, they're more likely to have an injury. I completely agree with them. There's no reason they can't schedule the bye weeks around these games. Ours is a couple weeks later after the Thurs game.
