Honestly, I think they are heading in the right direction. Tavares is the kind of guy that you can build around offensively. They need a consistant netminder.

I'll say it again... I think they're going to make the playoffs this year.

I think they will compete this season. Their blue-line is extremely shaky but Halak and Johnson should be better than they've had in a long while in net. Tavares is a top 10 talent in the NHL. Okposo and Grabner are valuable assets among the top six, they've got Reinhart and this last one I like a whole lot. Alexei Yashin is officially off the books at the end of the season

I don't think their D is that bad. If Visnovsky is healthy he's excellent, and I like a lot of their other guys too (Hamonic, Hickey, de Haan just off the top of my head, and all of them should be trending upward as well). Plus playing in front of goaltenders with the worst SV% in the league tends to make defensemen look worse to the casual observer.

Lubi is a great d-man, but like you said, if healthy. He played like 20 some games in 2013-14, and the sand is slipping through the hourglass awfully fast for Vis. He had a nasty concussion last year, and came back only to suffer a season ending injury shortly thereafter. I admit that Hickey and Hamonic are intriguing, but they're all young, and I don't see a powerplay man amongst them. Certainly not a strong top four, IMHO.

As soon as they get Rick DiPietro back healthy, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

I think de Haan can be a PP guy. If having a PP guy is that important another option is TJ Brennan, he's not strong defensively but he's a real asset on the PP, he was 4th in the entire AHL in scoring last year.

Doesn't everyone make the playoffs? Ok, ok.... I also think they make the playoffs as the NHL like other leagues feel the need to make money. But the Islanders are a bad team.
