I am not as adept as you guys on the cap, but I think we rolled something like 9 mil from last year into this years cap. I dont think we had to do much squeezing to get under the cap last year.

While I agree I wish we didnt redo contracts, the bitter fact is they are structured to do so before the ink is dry on them. Rather be a team close to the cap limits every year vs. those teams 30 mil under & they arent even trying.
As long as we dont lose young players we want to keep, I wont complain to loudly.

We started this offseason under the cap, I remember when we were starting the offseason over the cap & had to make a lot of moves just to get under. I think we have done better than in the past with the cap.
No, I wouldnt call us the best at it, but we are far from horrible right now.
True, but they still had to redo contracts to sign their own FA's. We keep pushing money beyond some playing days and it ties our hands.
A few years ago Dallas was at or near the cap and risked penalty because the current roster was to far under the cap for I think 3 consecutive years. I read the "Dead Money" while it counts against the cap, it doesn't count against the minimum salary rule.

That 2009 back-ups draft was one of the dumbest in NFL history hext to the Rickey Williams draft. But afleast NO got one good player.
2009 might be the one of the worst drafts in NFL history let alone Cowboys history. It set the Cowboys back five years and wasted valuable Romo years.

That was a terrible draft, but the Roy Williams trade made it the worst ever for the boy. If Dallas had not made that trade, Clay Matthews was on the board when we picked in the 1st. Lesean McCoy was on the board when our 2nd came up. Pretty sad

Well, we are in the bottom tier of cap room for 2018 even with that $9M and have a few of our own to resign still, including two huge ones. Also, that would be the same $9M we still owe Romo in 2018 even though he's been in the booth for a year already. Plus, as an example of how we got to a $9M rollover we paid Tyron Smith, Sean Lee and Travis Frederick each only $1.3M in salary due to restructures. That is kicking the can down the road

My guess is that's what we all want, I just think our annual issues, do hamper the chances.

I am not too happy about Franchising Lawrence. Hope he stays healthy. He disappeared late in the season.

honestly I am not completely sold on the long term thing. Kinda would rather a Fran tag this season. Would cost a lil more on the long term deal but at least we would know after 2 solid seasons.

Problem comes up if he produces and plays the FT like Cousins did. What will be the 2018 tag? Will he demand 2018 and 2019 tag totals as guaranteed money. I think Cousins may have changed the way the players use the tag as a negotiation starting point.

only talking of tagging him once
Not opposed to a long term deal either. Just a lil leary.

Per Over The Cap

Base Salary Cap: $177,200,000
Dallas cap space $12,247

Yes that's Twelve Thousand, Two Hundred Forty Seven.

I'm assuming that's counting Lawrence's FT.

I understand, but if he does like Cousins did he will ask for 2019 FT as his average salary and 2019 and 2012 FT money as guaranteed.

What would you have done?
instead of the franchise tag I would have put a 1st round tag that way we let other teams do the negotiating and then we can match or pass. if we pass then we get that team's next 2 1st round picks

I agree but that ship has sailed.

have they gotten rid of the poison pill in contracts? If not. We wouldnt be able to match a contract.

No doubt. If we had another $10-$20M hanging around a few of those years we wouldn't be watching other teams bring in big FAs while we sit back and sign Nolan Carroll.

I agree. It's not like his demands are going to go up too much if he puts up another great year since he's already asking for the Moon.
