Apparently Mears can take a pretty good punch. After watching this video, you can see Ambrose gets a clean shot to the head. I'm sure Mears had to shake the cobwebs off, but I've seen dudes dropped by weaker or less clean hits than this one.

Also NASCAR says:

NASCAR vice president of competition and racing development Robin Pemberton said following the race NASCAR would "take their time" reviewing the incident, but had yet to contact either Ambrose or Mears.

Upon further review, it may have been a glancing blow off the top of the head.

the punch itself was a properly thrown punch though. Which is rare to see in sports. Normally you see punches thrown wildly with no weight behind it. He may not have had his feet set to get his whole body into it, but the form itself was nice.

Wish I could have seen what happened on the track to start that.

Where is Jimmy Spencer when you need him? I love the shot he broke Kurt Busch's nose with. Take the window net down, left-hook, Whap! End of story. Kurt shows up the next day with a broken nose and racoon look.

Hamlin needs the same. Some of these guys are what Richard Petty characterized them. You have to pay them a million dollars to walk from the car to the jiffy john. I believe he made that statement when he had Kasey Kahne under contract after he bought Ray Evernham's operation and Kahne stiffed the Pettys by signing a contract with another team at the bginning of the season.

I am pretty sure Spencer could add to Ambrose's arsenal and show him how to use his body weight to do some damage. lol.

you know the last time a punch was reportedly thrown it cost Ryan Newman 50k.
Now I am not sure if Nascar was gonna fine him but JPM said he was gonna have a lawsuit which might have forced Nascars hand.

I hope they let it be boys have at it, & not fine or penalize anyone. This is how it should be. Not wrecking each others race cars. Deal with it after the race I say.

That's the way it used to be Schmoopy. Freaking corproate collars showed up and everyone got concerned with PC and wussified. I am not sure what NASCAR will do with a number of scuffles last night.

the funny thing is it costs all the teams & everybody (but Nascar) when they retaliate on the track. let them have a nice Hockey hoe down, when it becomes one sided break them up. Bruises never cost 6 figures like the race cars they wreck.

here's a video of it. Brightened up a bit to make it little more clear.
I saw the crew guy throw a punch at Ambrose but didn't realize he connected until I saw this.

We will see if the "Boy's have at it'' will stand. If I were NASCAR i would give them a bonus because its shit like that, that gets the fans fired up and others talking about it. People will be talking about it at work Monday morning.

Spot on Pitman. With dismal ratings and fans not going to the tracks, this would be a start. Then allow more product loyalty and competition with tires by allowing more manufacturers to come into NASCAR and I guarantee you, the ratings will return and the tracks will sell-out even with this krappy economy and numbnuts in the WH.

Well Ambrose to pay $25,000 and Mears to pay $15,000 in fines and both on probation until May 28th. What happened to "boys have at it"? I guess NASCAR needed the money

I thought Mears should have least received more in his fine. Mears shoved Ambrose for a couple of steps at the beginning before Ambrose hit him. I guess they always get the retaliator moreso than the instigator.

Mears was supposedly crowding Ambrose and they had some bumpin in the pits. Mears and Ambrose were running around each other in the latter portions of the race and Ambrose thought Mears was blocking him unnecessarily as Ambrose had tried to pass Mears several times in the closing laps. He finally passed Mears at the end. I thought that was what racing was all about but who knows why Ambrose was so frustrated.

I heard that Ambrose was mad at another driver & was going over to that guys car (don't know who) but had to walk by Mears car when doing so & was intercepted by Mears. Now I wonder who Ambrose was trying to go over to talk too.

Like I said Schmoopy, I don't know what had Ambrose so frustrated and angry. Maybe he was pissed because he was racing for that charity and fell out of the top ten early reducing his chances of getting any monies at all. I am guessing here. One thing for sure. He was pissed at a lot of people apparently.

Apparently the tape and the post-race actions were not so much Ambrose as it was initially Mears and Ambrose got caught by Mears as he was headed on his way to talk to Gilliland when Mears grabbed him and started pushing which prompted Ambrose to defend himself with the now famous swing and connect.

Richard Petty has even come out and stated that he thought Ambrose should not have been fined as the aggressor but as the victim/recipient. Apparently NASCAR needs glasses. Ambrose has decided to pay the fine and move along. Pretty bizarre though.

So it was Gilliland? That guy seems to make a lot of drivers mad during a season.
