I don't think he can cover (or doesn't want to cover) the costs of front loaded contracts. Some of the rumours in Ottawa is that the management is just trying to tread water until a sale or an investor coming on board.

But the guys has become increasingly detached from reality with each passing year so who knows what's going through that daiquiri addled brain.

Ladd - 35 goals
Okposo - 34 goals
Lucic - 33 goals
Nielson - 33 goals
Backes - 31 goals
Eriksson - 21 goals
Helm - 21 goals
Brouwer - 19 goals

Ovechkin - had 39 by the end of February this season.
Brett Burns - had 41 in two seasons
Erik Karlsson - had 28 in two seasons
The top 15 goals scores this season had 35 or more goals scored
Last season the top 10 goals scores had 35 or more goals scored.
Two rookies had more than 35 goals scored last season.

Does that + Dahlin & Carter Hutton make up the 35 pt gap between them and the final playoff spot last season? Or are they trading all these guys away come February?

It doesn't make up a 35 point gap, but I think it keeps them close enough that they're not selling at the deadline either. I think ultimately they miss out by about five points.

Watching Eichel and Skinner share a line will be good but I think a lot is riding on the hope and belief that both Dahlin and Mittelstadt come in and own. I think both will be good NHLers but if they don't manage expectations on them near-term (and throw both to the wolves in what is a very dangerous division and conference) they could be risking their futures.
