Per Fangraphs, it's Oxy:

The Most Underrated Player In Baseball | FanGraphs Baseball

He makes a couple of good points about geography and team performance. I like the WAR stats, although as GP points out, they can be wonky (and lead one to conclude that Arias is as good as HanRam for instance). Still and all, a pretty good piece.

Didn't ol' Andy Towers kind of have the same kind of underrated awesomeness in 2010?

If you read the article, Cameron tracks Oxy over a four year span. Towers was a one year wonder (but what a year that was!).

Talk about underrated, Todd Fraizer for ROTY.

It's a lock, him and Trout. Dickey will win the NL Cy Young (how cool is that, a knuckler), probably Weaver wins the AL one. NL MVP probably McCutcheon but Posey still could take it.

Defensive WAR stats are suspect. On the offensive side, I'd only worry about how the sabermatrician calculates their park factors, i.e. vectorized, regression model used....

So there ARE people outside of Cincy that know about this guy???

Not sure on Dickey as a lock. Cueto, Gio Gonzalez, Strasburg, maybe even Chapman are all still in it.. It may come down to who's team finishes better

Some of the best baseball fans in the world are hiding on the West Coast (or secretly wishing they were). ;)

I agree, but it seems pitchers get more leeway for good numbers on a bad team to win the CY. MVP relies a little bit more on standings (ie. Kershaw gets it in 2011, but Kemp apparently wasn't more valuable than Roidy Braun... err... Ryan). Either way, yes, Gio and Johnny have a few more starts to state their cases. For that matter, if Cain sets the world on fire (fingers-crossed), he could re-enter the discussion. However, the smart money is definitely on the knuckleballer that has been pitching professionally for almost two decades, and only recently with success. Great story.

Baseball Reference gives Darwin Barney (he of the .666 OPS) a 4.3 WAR this season, based mostly on his dWAR. However, Fan Graphs only has him at 2.2 WAR. Who's right?

2.2. The mark of the beast in his OPS ruins all chances at salvation.

EDIT: ;)

The most underrated player in baseball is Chase Headley. Switch hitting 3B hitting over .280 26 HR 98 RBI while playing half his games in the toughest hitting ballpark in all of baseball. Headley is a damn good defensive 3B as well.

Fangraphs has the better defensive measure, i.e. UZR. But one year UZR is all over the place. Need at least a three year average with UZR before it settles down to a believable measure. Even then, I believe my eyes more than UZR for players I can watch routinely.

Agree with this 100%. I've found 3 year UZR to be pretty reliable. Soon, we should have defensive fx, which looks to be a much improved metric.

I've been waiting for that for years now. It may not make it to the public.
