Athletic departments see surge financially in down economy - USATODAY.com
Tech was one of 22 schools to operate in the black. Note that the definition of "self-sufficient" is a positive balance with revenue from donations, tickets, media, etc. and does not include state allocations, tuition, or student fees in.
I think as much as Jim Weaver has frustrated fans, he has been great with the athletic budget. It's a much bigger asset than many think. Schools are getting pounded for raising athletic fees, or otherwise subsidizing sports with money that "should go to teachers". Virginia Tech can be omitted from that when it has the athletic program that is bringing in money. It's good will to the tax payer in this economy. Obviously being in the ACC has helped his job, but he's doing a lot himself to keep Tech on solid ground.
