Dunno ... a lefty who isn't injured ... I think I'd scrap one of the utility infielders.

I'd keep Nicolino and leave Worley with the trash at the curb when I left Arizona.

I'd rather seen Blandino make the club over the two nonroster IF. Gosselin if I had to keep one of them, but noway do I keep Penny. I think the club can survive without his veteran intangibles.

One assumes that an MLB-ready pitcher (or near enough) who is a lefty starter would be a nice prize find. You would spend 4-6 years developing a kid through the draft who can recreate that for you. So unless this guy is flawed, gotta wonder what Miami had in mind. Not much of a strikeout guy. Not many walks either.

The scouting report highlight Nicolino's low walk rate and low K rate. The BB/9 catches your attention and the K/9 gives you pause for concern. It sounds like he lacks a quality breaking ball with a mediocre fastball. His changeup is said to be his best pitch. He's a ground ball pitcher with little swing and miss ability like most ground ballers. I wouldn't think he could get through the order more than once without another pitch or a much improved hook. Long relief sounds like his life's calling.

Sometimes a guy gets to a new team and a coach or pitcher shows them a different way to grip the ball or something along that line and the desired result is better. He has 5 years of team control, but time isn't on his side being out of options.

The Reds are probably going to give Nicolino a pretty good look these next few days. I don't think anyone mentioned is he a starter or reliever.

Nicolino has 33 MLB starts and 17 relief appearances
He's been better as a reliever by about a run and a half looking at ERA splits.

He is maybe an alternative to Wandy Peralta. I don't think he's a LOOGY and I hope Price doesn't have one.

Mahle was not missing many bats in the game in Texas.

Phillip Ervin on the roster seems an interesting choice even if the pitching depth isn't yet necessary.
If he hangs around, can he play CF well enough to take that position? Schebler is not good enough.

If Hamilton could just get on base. And stay injury free, Maybe this spring, he did learn how to bunt. And maybe Ervin waiting in the wings will light a fire under him. Not that he doesn't go all out already. So who knows.

Just one more day of this thread. Then we start a new one for the season. It might be more about the weather for the 1st few weeks of the season.

Watching BH this spring, I think the final tally is in on the ongoing lie about him working on his bunting, as if you can do that in the gym down the street.

HE CAN'T BUNT. He's the second-best fake bunter in history behind Brandon Phillips.

But HE CAN'T BUNT.

The Reds DFA Pin-Nicolino and outrighted him to AAA. Any hopes he would make the club turned out to be a lie. Haven't heard if he's also made of wood.

To be sure, if chee-pass Miami couldn't use him, it's likely there's a wrinkle in his spaghetti.
Oh well, maybe he will end up on the team pitching the clincher on Sept. 26.

Did anyone watch the game last night and if so, did that phony little strike zone box annoy you, insult you or just plain piss you off?

Evidently that is a Fox gimmick this year. I can't believe somebody at "headquarters" thought this was what MLB needed to teach its fans not to be too stupid.

As an aside, the Boston announcers were saying that games at JetBlue against the Cubs were selling for as high as $500. I guess there are people who think their money is valuable. I mean, spring training is only once a year.

Didn't see the game or the strike zone box, but it seems pointless. Fox can have their opinion of the zone and the umpire will have his. Only one really matters.

Maybe next they could put lines to show us where foul territory is. It may or may not be on the chalk.:noidea:

I'm ... I'm speechless. Heartbroken.
Why can't they play it in June or sometime when it's nice weather?

I am not any more optimistic about this bullpen than any other Price has had.
At least the Quack is back.
The Shack is on the rack.
Cody Reed watches another opportunity slip past him.

I still haven't heard who is in and who is out. Iglesias is the only guy that I think we know what they have. Reed was vying for a bullpen job and Garrett was starting. Now Reed is starting in AAA and Garrett is in the pen. Hughes, Quacker, and Peralta look like they're in, but I don't know what to expect from any of them. Hernandez, Shackleford, and Lorenzen are all nursing injuries.

Meanwhile Worley and Weiss are on standby reading the injury report and watching the waiver wire.
