Should the Vikings retire #84 for Randy Moss?

Normally, a player with a career like Moss's is without question worthy of retiring a jersey number for. That said, I do think that it's debatable given that he only spent 7 seasons in Minnesota. That's not a small number of years to be with one team, but when I think of players getting their jersey numbers retired, I usually think more along the lines of 8-10+ years. Ultimately, Moss spent just half of his career with the team, so it's kind of a toss-up depending on how you look at it. In my opinion, I wouldn't be against it, but I'd also understand if they didn't do it as well.

Arguably top 5 all time. Maybe #1 or 2 in terms of impact. I get the longevity angle...

That's an easy yes. Moss had one of the greatest rookie seasons in NFL history in 1998 receiving for 1,313 yards and 17 TDs and continued to have a stellar career in Minnesota, putting up six consecutive 1,000+ yard seasons in his first six years there.

I think there's no debate that Moss is top #2 all time in general, second only to Jerry Rice. Moss was probably #1 in terms of impact on the game as a whole. My only question about retiring his number is the fact that he only spent half of his career as a Viking. That honor is usually reserved for guys who spent the vast majority of their careers with a specific team, whereas Moss spent time with 5 different teams throughout his career. That said, he was so great with the Vikings that I think there's room to consider it regardless.

I was afraid to open this thread because I was worried I would find you ripping on another all time Vikings great...

Of course his number should be retired.

Unless longevity is how you measure greatness...

This is the same discussion you would have about Calvin Johnson, only if Calvin Johnson was a better player.

Considering how he spent his entire 9-year career with Detroit and holds some NFL receiving/most Lions franchise receiving records, Calvin Johnson definitely deserves to have his number retired there. He's one of those players who I'll always wonder what he could have accomplished had he been in a better situation for more of his career, be it in Detroit or elsewhere. I always had a high level of respect for him as a rival team player.

I'll admit that I was probably too hard on AD. I'll start caring less after he's retired and eventually returns to the team in some capacity, if even only for a 1-day signing retirement deal/Vikings ring of honor induction. Peterson's # I would retire without question. Dude was the face of the franchise for 10 years, and the lone face of it for probably 8 of those years aside from when Favre was here. Combined with his records/achievements, he can't be denied all of the standard Vikings team honors plus his number being retired.

As for Moss, as far as I can remember, I've always been pretty supportive of him when speaking of him on this board. A lot of people blasted me for that thread where I dared to compare his talent level to Jerry Rice. In terms of retiring his #, I'd be for it, but there apparently is debate about it for the Vikings organization. Hence why I made this thread to pose the question for us as fans.

Oh, and yes, I stand by what I said about Moss before. He was more talented than Jerry Rice, and would have surpassed his receiving records had he had the luxury of playing with elite QB's like Montana/Steve Young for the majority of his career as Rice did. Rice would also have been amazing regardless. That said, no one can convince me that Rice would have accomplished what Moss did if given 1 year of an ancient Cunningham/2 years of Tom Brady/a few years of Culpepper who never amounted to anything without Moss/a bunch of other scrubs and washed up old QB's like Moss had.

I would have loved to see the numbers Moss would have put up with Jeff George throwing to him for a couple of more seasons.

Somewhere out there, Jeff George in his 50's is still pondering putting out an open offer to return to the Vikings to start throwing to Thielen, Diggs and Rudolph in the event that Cousins goes down.
