Wouldn't have mattered. They'd still be in a hole due to injuries and would be the added negative of teaching Howard and Nash the triangle without an offseason. If Phil is grinning, its because he realizes what a disaster he avoided.


As for Gasol, on paper I think the benching makes sense. But it only works if Gasol buys in which I don't think he will so it'll probably end badly. He pouted the last 2 years as Bynum took more of his touches and he's pouted more this season with Howard and Nash in. So you can just imagine he'll hate being benched. I say trade him for what you can get (Simmons is right on the trade value) and then fire D'Antoni at the end of the season.
