The math is simple. If nobody else wins, the Yankees will.
Pirates are going to lose Cole but they are also going to lose a lot of players they have to trade to rebuild.
That will put them below the Reds for the next few years. I will be overjoyed at this.
Cole never pitched well against the Reds, who I think got a free room inside his cranium.
But he does offer 200 innings, which isn't bad for an NL pitcher.
Sometimes I think MLB players-especially pitchers, are kinda like NFL running backs- they ALL get hurt, so the goal is to sign the big contract before either getting hurt, or coming clean you already are.
Sometimes it doesn't matter- Ohtani had a know UL injury...the yearly salary isn't bad by MLB standards, but it cost them $20M just to offer him a contract.
