1994 Pocono July race. The only reason I remember was I was at the race.

1 Geoffrey Bodine
2 Ward Burton rookie season
3 Joe Nemechek rookie season
4 Jeff Burton
5 Morgan Shepherd

There was also a Bristol race one year where Earnhardt won, but the only 2 other cars on the lead lap were rookies.

Found the Bristol race, they were not Rookies but it was still a weird top 5. 1994

1 Dale Earnhardt
2 Ken Schrader
3 Lake Speed
4 Geoffrey Bodine -1 lap
5 Michael Waltrip -3 laps
6 Bobby Labonte -6 laps rookie season

I remember watching this one and it was the way the cautions fell in the middle of pit cycles that put everyone so many laps down.

I was scratching my head trying to figure out which Bristol race you were talking about. There were a couple of key contributors to why there were only 3 cars left on the lead lap. One was that 21 of the 37 starters were involved in an accident during the race. The other was the caution you mentioned at the tail end of a cycle of green flag stops (rare enough at Bristol). That race was also the last career top 10 for Dave Marcis.

I don't know why, but I always want to say it was two rookies on the last lap with Dale.:noidea: Old age creeping up on me.

It seems to me that there were two cautions that race that fell in green flag pit stops. But I have already proven how bad my memory is.
