Morning Briefing: Mets face quick Labor Day turnaround

CINCINNATI -- Forget about the second wild card. Maybe the Mets will host the winner-take-all game on Oct. 5.

The Mets (71-66) now trail the Cardinals (71-64) by one game for the second wild card and the Giants (73-63) by 2½ games for the first wild card.

Bartolo Colon looks to keep things rolling when he opposes Cincinnati Reds rookie right-hander Robert Stephenson on Monday at 1:10 p.m. ET at Great American Ball Park.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Mets, who played on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball at Citi Field.

Longtime Red Jay Bruce will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Bruce was acquired by the Mets on Aug. 1 for second baseman Dilson Herreraand 19-year-old left-hander Max Wotell.

Morning Briefing: Here comes the rest of the 40-man roster

CINCINNATI -- And now the rest of the reinforcements are arriving.

Rafael Montero subs for Jacob deGrom on the mound on Tuesday, while Gavin Cecchini, Brandon Nimmo, T.J. Rivera, Eric Campbell, Josh Edgin and Erik Goeddel also report to Cincinnati now that Triple-A Las Vegas' season is complete. They join Michael Conforto, Matt Reynolds, Kevin Plawecki & Gabriel Ynoa who were called up Sept. 1st.

Montero (0-0, 3.68 ERA) opposes Cincinnati Reds left-hander Brandon Finnegan (8-10, 4.19) at 7:10 p.m. ET at Great American Ball Park.

Montero tossed five scoreless innings against the Miami Marlins last Monday but also walked six batters while logging 100 pitches. He then surrendered a three-run homer while working 1 1/3 innings in a 29-pitch tune-up with Double-A Binghamton on Saturday.

The Mets (72-66) now trail the San Francisco Giants by 1½ games and the St. Louis Cardinals by 1 game for the National League's wild-card spots.

With four long balls on Tuesday night, the Mets now have 189 homers -- fourth-most in franchise history. With 23 games remaining, they need only 11 more homers to match the franchise record of 200 set in 2006. A whopping 53.7 percent of the Mets' scoring this season -- 293 of 546 runs -- has come via the homer.

Morning Briefing: It's Thor's-Day as Mets look to win 14th straight vs. Reds

CINCINNATI -- The New York Mets came close to waking up this morning with a share of the second wild-card spot. Instead, with thePittsburgh Pirates one strike from completing a victory against the Cardinals on Tuesday night at PNC Park, Tony Watson served up three ninth-inning homers and St. Louis rallied for the win.

The Giants also rallied late for a victory in Colorado, so the Mets still trail San Francisco by 1½ games and the Cardinals by one game for the two NL wild-card spots.

The Mets, winners of 13 straight games against Cincinnati, try to complete another sweep of the Reds on Wednesday at 12:35 p.m. ET at Great American Ball Park. Noah Syndergaard (12-8, 2.56 ERA) opposes right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (8-2, 2.93).

Amazin' ride continues as Mets sweep Reds

Syndergaard, Mets sweep, beat Reds for 14th straight time

Wilmer Flores' pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning gives him a career-high-matching 16 long balls this season. It also was Flores' first career pinch-hit homer.

Jose Reyes produced the 19th leadoff homer of his Mets career with a first-pitch long ball on Wednesday at Cincinnati. That breaks a tie with teammate Curtis Granderson for the franchise record.

Via ESPN Stats & Information: Jose Reyes is the first player to record both a homer and a stolen base in consecutive games since Pittsburgh's Starling Marte on April 17 and 18, 2015. They are the only two players to accomplish the feat in the last four seasons.
