For me the issue wasn't going all in on Ohtani, it's that there was no other plan. The Mariners had all this international signing money, but they didn't even use any of it. There were still prospects out there worth signing and the M's didn't even try to get any of them. It was like the mindset was the M's are some glorious organization that everyone wants to play for so of course Ohtani will sign here and it was a complete shock to the front office when he didn't. So Dipoto's "plan" after was to stick his thumb up his butt and do nothing and wax poetic about the depth of the bullpen.

I have no question it came as a shock to the organization as it came as a huge shock to pundits. I think they were about 75% sure he was coming. But ya, the lack of an option B is concerning especially when he blew up the farm system to get all the international money. Everything in life you need a plan B regardless of what it is.

This coupled with the fact that he appears to actually be 'as advertised'. He ( Ohtani ) may have had a very poor SHOwing in spring training .... but you can't ignore the remarkable few weeks he has put together to start the regular season.

He fits into LAA's scheme better ( Pujhols plays 1b ) than he would have here ( what would we do with Nellie ? )

shoulda woulda coulda ... just another Mariners blunder to pile onto 40yrs worth of other blunders.

Funniest thing is Houston all but thought they were handed the AL West crown on Opening day and here they are a few games in back of the Angels and they ( Astros ) are playing great ball and still trailing the Halo's !!

And all the idiotic things Manfred is trying to do to change baseball, he is just allowing this to go on. Let's do stupid stuff to grow the sport except put a good product on the field.

Well how about that? Doesn't surprise me at all. Another "smart" move by Dipstick wiping out the farm system. Of course Ichiro is bringing in more revenue so it all makes sense. NOT!! :bullshit:

Gordon is a nice consolation prize

He is, but to me, if they don't make the playoffs this year that deal isn't worth it. Could have resigned Dyson and kept three of the top prospects they had going after Ohtani. The whole franchise is built for this season.

Honestly it should have been more than realistic to have Gordon and Dyson

I wouldn't have an issue with that had they paid for a starter in FA as well. Jerry is falling into the trap Bavasi and Jack did. With their job on the line they take a torch to the farm system to win now. If somehow Jerry gets an extension in two years the organization is going to have to pony up money to get guys to stay competitive unless somehow Lewis, Bishop, White and two pitchers end up being above average players.

Just noticed the Red Sox already have a +60 run differential in just 17 games. That's insane.

Interesting enough the A’s lead the AL in WAR

It would be so A’s to become a contender and win the WC

Royals Outright Brandon Maurer

By Jeff Todd | May 3, 2018 at 6:03pm CDT

The Royals have outrighted right-hander Brandon Maurer, per a club announcement. He’ll join the organization’s Triple-A affiliate.

Maurer, 27, looked to be an interesting buy-low piece when he was acquired last year in a multi-player swap. But things have not gone well for him since he landed in Kansas City.

Through 24 1/3 innings with the Royals, most of them coming down the stretch in 2017, Maurer owns an 8.88 ERA with 24 strikeouts and 14 free passes. He has continued to be bombed in his six Triple-A frames since being optioned earlier this season, recording an 8:1 K/BB ratio but coughing up 11 earned runs on 11 hits.

Matt Harvey is about to be DFAd by the Mets.

Now, he's been absolutely terrible since his 2nd surgery and was recently designated to the bullpen in NY, but it'll be interesting to see who kicks the tires on him to see if they can find magic in a bottle.

The guy a lot of us mentioned to get at start of year, but DIP knew better:

Corey Dickerson .315, 5 Homers, 24 RBI.

He would have looked nice in LF.

Yea I still don't love that Gamel was handed a spot after a hot 6 weeks last year. He really hasn't shown anything aside from that.
