With the 28th pick in the 2018 NFL Hoop Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

Rashaan Evans - ILB - Alabama

The way this kid closes on the ball carrier is eerily reminiscent of Shazier... Having him fall to 28 was a godsend! Outside of Roquan Smith, this kid is easily one of the most versatile, playmaking ILBs in the draft.

I'm not sure if we've ever gone DEF the 1st 4 picks, but that's how it's played out.

Evans reportedly played some of the 2017 season on some bad hammys...therefore didn't run at the combine or his pro day and I think that kinda allowed LVE to surpass him on some boards including the Hoop...I think fully healthy, Evans is a better football player. With Bostic in the fold they can take their time with him and make sure his wheels are good.

Should get some nickel work and ST as a rookie.

With the 60th pick in the 2018 NFL Hoop Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

Jessie Bates - FS - Wake Forest

Excellent value at 60. We wanted Justin Reid in the 1st, but this kid is the next best FS on the board. We knew if we landed Evans in the 1st that we were going to put Bates at the top of our list in the 2nd. Played out perfectly. From what I've seen of Bates' film, he plays the Safety position a little aggressively for my liking, but you won't find a better man-cover-capable safety in the 2nd round. He is capable of playing either FS or SS IMO. With Davis making the transition to FS & Burnett penciled in at SS, they can have the luxury to groom this kid in either direction. That is the main reason why I think grabbing the safety with the best coverage skills is the best decision here.

With the 92nd pick in the 2018 NFL Hoop Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

BJ Hill - DT - NC State

Didn't know much about this kid so I did some homework after ATL pointed us in his direction. He told us he had the best potential to be starting caliber eventually and would instantly upgrade the depth at D-Line (pushing McCullers out the door), and he is right. We originally wanted RB, but the pool was mighty thin already and none of the available players looked like contributors out the gate. Edge/OLB was under consideration as well. But ATL wisely made the decision to choose the best player capable of contributing out the gate.

With the 148th pick in the 2018 NFL Hoop Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

Jeff Holland - OLB - Auburn

Best case of highest potential available. Dupree's 5th year option still hasn't been discussed much so the future of the position is cloudy. Even though they set a franchise record sack number last season we all know full well that the OLB position needs to be better. Not writing off Dupree yet, and certainly not Watt, but the pressure off the edge just wasn't very consistent. ATL first brought this kid to our attention back in the draft thread some time ago. In less time he amassed comparable numbers to that of his predecessor Carl Lawson (Bengals). He hasn't had much time to be a starter at the position, but his sack numbers in 1 year alone were incredible. He could carve himself out a role in sub packages just like Carl Lawson has in the NFL.

With the 165th pick in the 2018 NFL Hoop Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

Tarvarus McFadden - CB - Florida State

Another BPA for a position of need. Nobody feels "secure" about the secondary since it still continues to be a weakness every year. So why not provide more competition? Give new coach Tom Bradley more tools to work with. McFadden had good value at the end of the 5th Rd. A few of the draft big boards we were looking at had him in the top 100 prospects. Walter Football ranks him as the 16th best at the position, and NFL.com projects him in the 5th Rd. I'm surprised he fell to us honestly. He was the 19th CB taken in this mock. He lacks top end speed, but he has the size & ball skills to compete at the NFL level. Scouts say he is at his best in press-man coverage or in zone. That is right up our alley. I do think he will struggle with keeping his hands off receivers. He sort of mugs receivers in press coverage. He won't be able to get away with that very much in the NFL.

With the 220th pick in the 2018 NFL Hoop Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

Martez Carter - RB - Grambling St

Loving this pick this late in the draft. Small school kid that gets overlooked, but one hell of an athlete. He’s a Ray Rice clone (also comparable to DeAngelo Williams). Shifty, yet surprisingly strong runner. Small frame, but powerful with surprising quickness & great hands to boot. Catches the ball really well out of the backfield and in routes. Credit to ATL & SP for driving this pick home. We had a few different RBs on our radar from our last pick in the 5th to this pick. ATL wisely decided to wait on this kid and knew he'd fall to us in the 7th. We would all like to see Colbert get this kid.

With the 246th pick in the 2018 NFL Hoop Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select:

Quadree Henderson - WR - Pittsburgh

This pick gives us a slot WR & a great return specialist. 2 birds, 1 stone. This kid is the speed demon gadget player that Fichtner could use to do damage to defenses using the no-huddle. His motion sweep quickness & running vision is a thing of beauty. We had some thought about double-dipping at LB with Jermaine Carter (Maryland), but opted to add another tool to the offense since we already invest 5 picks into the defense.

Did some number crunching this morning @ATL96Steeler @SteelersPride

In the 4 previous years that we have done these Mocks with @Nosferatu, we have a 78% success rate in matching position targets! Actually it would be 80.6% if we don't include the 6th Rd pick from the 2017 draft since it somehow got left out of the mock?

Gotta say that is quite impressive though! :suds:

Wow!

We actually nailed Hargrave and Cockrell ended up a Steeler for a while.
Yup! It's pretty rare that we nail a pick on the head by player. But at least we have gotten the position correct in the first round 2 years running! 2016 we went 3/3 with the first 3 rounds.
