oh my god I'm laughing so hard.
oh... fuck me.

Well I'm kind of anxious to see now what we'll do to 'upgrade' other positions. And it's amazing to hear how Neil was 'very aggressive' in pursuing him.
For fuck's sake....

Dissapointing. He is a major league player, but a downgrade from last year.

So far the Pirates officially downgraded the catcher position. Not a good start and I have a feeling it will be more of the same.

well im sure he was pretty cheap and probably just going to platoon with that mckenry kid and saves you money instead of paying snyder and injured all the time doumit

Barajas spent the 2011 season with the Dodgers and he posted a .230/.287/.430 line with 16 home runs... yada yada yada... obtain a catcher with above-average power and below-average on-base skills in Barajas (the average MLB catcher hit .244/.312/.388 in 2011)

Hes not that bad, an average MLB catcher isnt he?

Is it going to help long term, nope, but if he can hit like last season he wont be a waste of money.

Barajas is one of the top power-hitting catchers in the game. His 50 homers over the last two years are third-most by a major league catcher over that span.

Power from the right side will take a hit at PNC. But to others point, I don't have a problem with Barajas in a vacuum. But if Barajas is my starter, I want a better backup than Mckenry. If they went out and signed Kelly Shoppach (or even better a left handed hitter to platoon), than I would have no problem with the catcher situation at all.

I agree, it's not a waste of money, his contract is fairly reasonable.

No it is not a waste of money. If the money saved from Snyder/Doumit to him is used for an upgrade at 1B, SS or P and the WAR difference isn't enough to justify the higher salary so for that it makes sense.

BTW...The WAR of Barajas, Snyder and Doumit over the last 4 year average. Normally I would look only 2 to 3 years but last year was a wash for Snyder. Basically over 4 years Barajas is below replacement but over 3 he is above Snyder and below Doumit.

Showing the 4yr avg then the last 3yr avg
Barajas - .95 - .93
Doumit - 1.65 - 1
Snyder - 1.15 - .6

Catcher position downgraded

Barajas is no better than OK. He's a .230 hitter, with a sub .300 OBP and a little power..... and an average defender.

And he's 36 years old..... which means that deterioration of his performance is likely.

Looks as though Huntington has successfully downgraded the Pirates' catcher position for 2012.

The only good thing I see is that Barajas and McKenry/Jaramillo will be cheaper than Doumit and Snyder. Whoopee.

Clint barmes is supposedly close to signing. 11 million over 2 years. I predicted barmes but i thought hed be about a 3 million dollar player. This seems absurd.

yep that is kinda high compared to others signed, I guess its a Pirates tax of sorts.

11 mill for 3-4 war isnt bad though.

Hmmm.....

- $3 mill for 1 year of Cedeno, who will turn 29 in February, or.....

- $11 mill for 2 years of Barmes, who will turn 33 in March.

Hey Illinest..... I agree..... "absurd" is the word. Heck, why don't we just bring back Jack Wilson. He'll be only 34 in December. (No, I'm NOT serious.)
