Broncos pay heavy price for being stubborn in Von Miller deal that goes beyond the wallet

If you have not read this yet, do not. This guy basically goes on about how the Broncos overpaid for Von Miller and should have extended him before this and that they got put over barrel and gang raped and yadda, yadda, yadda.

I am not sure how you can right any of this, the price of Miller was known months ago, almost since the end of the season. We knew it was going to be north of 100 million for the total contract, we knew a couple months ago it was 114 million. That part had been agreed upon by the Broncos and Von and everyone knew this amount was going to be what we were paying for him.

I absolutely love people with hindsight that sit there and go you should have, well what this brain child does not understand is that the Broncos tried and they tried low balling the hell out of Von. Von just kept saying no. Von knew he was going to get paid and low balling him to stay here was just not going to work. Every once in awhile you do have to pay your super stars for a team. It is just how this business works. Occasionally you will get guys that will give the team a home town discount. This should never be counted on and no NFL player should ever be faulted for trying to get all they can out of every contract that they sign.

How does this piece even become more irresponsible? When you go and look at how Von's contract is laid out, you suddenly start to see some really good work in it. The contract is laid out with even money almost across the board, you are not under or overpaying any of the years except the one year that the Broncos are actually slightly strapped. This year, they are under paying Von and actually added cap space that give them the opportunity to add another piece if they want. Yes, you read that correctly, they actually got cap space back this year for Von in a year they kinda really wanted it. There are still some nice players out there that could be signed to come in and help this team. All of the big money years for Von's contract are occurring when we already have a lot of room to absorb this contract. Plus, we are not paying a big money QB any more, we have discounts across the board in that area and do not have to address that issue for years to come when Von will be aged and not able to demand the same amount of money.

To end this, all I really have to say is that you Charles Robinson are nothing more than a hack trying to play sensational journalism when you have no idea what the fuck you are talking about.

Okay, rant over.

To add, in a year or 2 when Mack and a few others sign their deals, we may be looking back on Von's contract and think that we got one hell of a deal.

We are going to see quite a few of these articles. We are still over a week away from camp so at this point they have nothing else to write about to get clicks. The other part of this with national writers instead of the local ones (and even some of them do this...looking at you Klis) is because they are reporting on so many teams they just don't have a clue how each of those teams are set up for the future. So they just see the big number and go "oh man Broncos are in trouble moving forward cap wise because of this deal" instead of actually taking the time to look at the fact that we have a ton of cap space even after this Von Miller deal, some deals we can get out of from some aging veterans if need be, lots of draft picks because of the comp picks we will have from other overpriced veterans hitting the FA market, and most importantly as you said a very cheap QB position that should allow some high priced contracts to be on our payroll and us still have room to add players. One final piece of this is we don't have any high priced guys coming up for a new deal other than Sanders for the next couple of years. Roby if we want to get him done early might cost a pretty penny but otherwise all of our top talent is locked in for a few years.

Honestly I haven't hardly read any of the National news reports on Von Miller getting signed. Most of them are written just like this guy with very little knowledge of the team.
