The Detroit Red Wings recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald today from the Grand Rapids Griffins because Jimmy Howard is with his wife, Rachel, who is in the hospital after delivering the couple's first child, a boy.

Ty Conklin will start Tuesday's game in Columbus, with MacDonald as the back-up.

MacDonald, 31, is 3-2-0, with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage and one shutout.

Conklin is coming off a rough outing, allowing seven goals on 25 shots in a 7-1 loss at Washington Saturday. He was stellar in a 3-0 shutout at Colorado Oct. 8 in his only other appearance this season.
