I chose 81 games exactly

Water seeks its own level just as a generic .500 ball club will.

And the 2018 M's are a text book example of a .500 club. NOT contenders at all ... but have spent enough money and made plenty of Monty Hall deals to keep fan interest up enough to sell a couple million tickets - attendance.

Typical kiss your sister season coming ( meaningless )

barnicle was was taking the poll on mlb, and i was going 88..so i will stay with it

minnesota has improved as has the angels(not enough in the angels case IMO)
they will still have to beat those teams out of it..the wild card

Welcome to the Mariners board. If you have any questions, feel free to let any of us know.

That aside, I think 88 wins is optimistic. I think it's a possibility that if everything goes right and everyone stays healthy, it could happen. If the team was healthy the entire year last year, I think they could've pulled out 88 wins. That being said, we have a crew that is another year older. Therefore you can expect a decrease in production from Cruz, Cano and Felix in particular. Cruz is a freak of nature, but it's hard to expect him to continue shelling out home runs at the rate he has at his age.

If I were to put an over/under on the Mariners I'd say 84 wins, plus or minus 5 or so.

I hope that you're right and the Mariners absolutely destroy my expectations and you can quote this and make me look stupid.

85-87... Our offense will carry us enough to overcome our starting pitching...
I was tempted but ended up one notch lower. If Paxton had a better track record for staying healthy and the bottom of the rotation wasn't so questionable, I would definitely see upper 80s. As bad a start to the season we had last year plus the historic amount of injuries, they still got within 1-2 games of the WC in September. In '16, they were still in it in game 161. The lineup should be potent enough to get the team over .500 if the pitching can just be at least average.

There's no better time than now for optimism so for me I went more than 87. If the team stays relatively healthy, and we have a couple of pitching surprises throughout the year it's a WC game after close to 90 wins.

If the Mariners track record proves otherwise, this optimism will fade fast as realistically expected. I'm crossing my fingers, but not holding my breath for fear of suffocation.

2018 goals for all 30 teams: From getting to the World Series ... to just getting someone to care

2018 goals for all 30 teams: From getting to the World Series ... to just getting someone to care

Accomplish one of the following:

  • Make the playoffs
  • Win 90 games
Seattle Mariners (25-1)

To be honest, I'm not sure 90 wins without a playoff spot would do it for the Mariners, who have the longest postseason drought in baseball and haven't played past Game 162 since 2001. Their front office is led by a GM, Jerry Dipoto, who has a fantastic reputation but only one playoff appearance among three seasons in Anaheim and two in Seattle. His handpicked manager, Scott Servais, was hired without any dugout experience (he was Dipoto's assistant GM with the Angels) and hasn't reached October. The Mariners have the worst farm system in baseball by a pretty good margin. If they don't win this year, you might very well start hearing talk of wobbly chairs in that front office.

I just feel this team will get off to a slow start, injuries and players like Cano, Kyle, Cruz are going to show signs of getting old. Add to that maybe one legit pitcher in paxon, I could see them as the worst team in baseball. I'm thinking they will be lucky to win 76. I really hope I'm wrong.

No way they are near the worst team in baseball ... there are a few sold out and massively depleted clubs out there this year who will struggle to win 65 games. Mariners are a cinch for 72 wins and could surprise some people with an 84 win season

Yea we will start slow ... its a patented Mariners move every fan expects

I have a pretty negative feeling about this season. Between the big bats aging and starting pitching full of holes and question marks, I think this team may not make it to 70 wins this year. But don't let my pessimism influence your prediction.

Less than 70.

64-48 with 50 more games to go.... So far, they're exceeding almost everyone's predictions from the beginning of the season...

I think they are exceeding the predicted win totals because of how bad about 10 of the other 14 AL teams have been and we all missed that versus how much better they are than predicted.

76 wins through Sept 2nd with 25 more games to play. 16 of those 25 games are with teams sporting a sub .500 season. The other 9 games are with teams that have a higher winning percentage than what our infamous M's currently carry (.551). It's looking like around 90% of us will likely have guessed too low for the number of wins for the season. Oh well- how about next season?

I was in that 82 win range and while they probably somewhat go over that if they bring back the same team with little moves during the winter, then expect the same crap next year.

Well....looks like 3 voters had it all figured out right from the get go. There's always next season. Seems like this has been said for many years now. :heh:

It's been one hell of a season. So many ups and so many downs. Early on it looked like this just might be the break out year but then if fizzled out and started to feel like so many of the past seasons. Hope we all get re-energized for next Spring and management makes the moves so there can be hope for 2019. Hope the Stros make the WS and take it again for the AL. Will be fun to watch the WS again.

I chose 73-75 wins. They did much better than I expected but the collapse hurt.

I expect them to build on this in the off-season and get better. Playoffs or bust!
