Elliotte is back for another season and what do you guys think, is this tampering?

14. Montreal owner Geoff Molson mentioning John Tavares is a perfect illustration of the pressure felt by the Canadiens organization

Hoping Hall takes it to the next level. Would also love for the Devils to keep an eye on the Vegas defenseman.

"Gahagen is attempting to be entered into the US Army World Class Athlete Program, which supports soldiers who are good enough to compete on the American Olympic Team. A major hangup is that usually means individual competitors (like Paul Chelimo, who won a silver medal in 5,000-metres at the 2016 Games), not team athletes. Gahagen is hoping to get the clearance, because he’s on the US radar for February."

My college friend (and Nerf Glider Challenge partner ) did this for baseball, even though I don't think the Olympics were terribly likely for him at the time. This is Army rather than Air Force but I'll be a little surprised if they turn Gahagen down.

PK Subban for Matt Duchene trade?

lol

Jarmo, block Joe's number, mmmkay? He's clearly affected by the thin air up there.

I think you could throw in Steve Duchesne and Gaetan Duchesne and that still wouldn't be enough :D

I’m sure they are.

Also wonder if Jersey is a potential landing spot for Tavares. Have the cap space, the need, Hall seems to think they hit it off. If he enjoys the NYC area he gets to stick around there and doesn’t have to worry about arena & training facility BS.

I've thought it but wondered if that's just me being overly hopeful. Would be amazing but won't hold my breath.

Uh, what Pittsburgh-Detroit trade Elliotte? Why are you burying the effin lede here?

5. Ferris also represents Andreas Athanasiou. The longer this takes, the more you think a Detroit-Pittsburgh trade is contingent on his signing with the Red Wings. At his season-opening media conference, Penguins GM Jim Rutherford indicated there were three options for the Penguins to consider. Riley Sheahan is one, and I think the parameters are all but agreed to. (I’m wondering if Derrick Pouliot is a possibility, he seems like a sensible gamble for Detroit.) But, I don’t know how the Red Wings feel about potentially losing both Athanasiou and Sheahan, which could be holding up the deal. Of course, Pittsburgh could decide to move on, too.

5. At one point (maybe the 2016 draft), Bergevin inquired about Calgary’s Sam Bennett. One of my NHL exec friends has a standard line: “You can solve your problem, or you can trade your problem. It’s always better to try and solve it.”

I think that’s what the Flames will do with Bennett, who is moving to wing for Tuesday’s game in Nashville. They want to get him going. Calgary needs bottom-six production, and will try to kickstart it with Mark Jankowski, excellent at AHL Stockton.

6. A lot of talk about penalties in Calgary, but don’t expect the Flames to ask Matthew Tkachuk to change much. He’s taken six, two back of Sidney Crosby for the NHL lead, but has drawn nine, which is best. The Flames didn’t like a roughing penalty Tkachuk took at the 20-minute mark of the second period last Thursday against Carolina, since it was 200 feet from their net. They’d like him to drop that foul, but don’t want to tamper too much with his style.

24. Outstanding story courtesy of Sportsnet’s Shawn McKenzie: In San Jose’s coaches’ office was a large printer/photocopier. Bob Boughner always struggled with it. He would kick it and/or swear at it all the time. Fellow Sharks assistant Steve Spott — a notorious practical joker — loved watching this. So when Boughner got the top job in Florida, Spott and a few buddies surreptitiously loaded the infuriating object onto the moving truck. As Boughner unpacked from the cross-continent journey, he came across this big, heavy box. Sure enough, there was the printer. He had to load it into the back of his truck and get rid of it himself. That is one spectacular move.

Lots of Karlsson talk, but also this little nugget...

3. With Kris Versteeg out a long time, Calgary may look for a power-play specialist and someone who brings edge to their game. They feel a little “too nice,” outside of Travis Hamonic, Micheal Ferland, Mike Smith and Matthew Tkachuk. I could see the Flames part of a growing group eying Buffalo’s Evander Kane.

Without their 1st rounder? Fat chance.

Yeah, I don't think I want Kane in any event (not sure how much he would cost as a pure rental).

Also, from Elliotte's article...

Nazem Kadri is on-pace for 42 goals. His professional high is 32, achieved last season. He beat that total once in the OHL, with 35 as 19-year-old in London. This century, there are four players who scored 40 goals for the first time as 27-year-old: Markus Naslund (41 in 2000-01), Brian Gionta (48 in 2005-06), Henrik Zetterberg (43 in 2007-08) and Patrick Kane (46 in 2015-16). Kadri doesn’t have a great shot, so he’s got to get close and get greasy to earn them.

Probably a lot. I could see one of TB, STL or Minny going for him. He would give the first two the most complete top-6's in the league.

/Doubt Kadri gets 40 this year or any year but I am certainly glad the Leafs held onto him through the rebuild. Ditto for JVR.
