After 54 games, one third of the season, the Phillies are 31-23, .574, sporting the best NL home record, 19-9, and the 4th best ERA in MLB. Not too shabby for this young team still coming into it’s own, but only currently good enough for third place, one game behind first place Atlanta and trailing Washington by a half.
Would it be nice to repeat this mediocrity? If we did, we would then be 62-46 near August 1, still playing .574 ball, but 16 games over .500. The hat trick for the final 54 would mean the Phils finish the season 93-69, matching their 2009 pennant winning results, and surely good enough for the 2018 post season. All they must do is stay healthy and plod along at the same, methodical .574 winning percentage.
This scenario may seem a little unreal, but it’s definitely possible as long as the players continue to learn and mature with each series they play. This team is worth following. May the excitement continue!
