Calling up Shaw wouldn’t cost 500k. It would only cost approx 70k

It's all average though, at least against the luxury tax. Over the course of the season it would be 500k (or 550k maybe, whatever the minimum is now) so he would count as 500k against the tax, at least that's how I understand it.

Now I don't know why the luxury tax is different than the actual amount paid.

I think they take all the major league salaries paid a team the end of the year and if it north of X, you are fucked, if it is south of X, easy peasy.

And I THINK the rookie min is something like 450K. So 1/6 of that is a bit over 70k

I'm fairly certain luxury tax is calculated using the average annual value of contracts, but I'll be honest I'm just assuming the guys making the minimum salary count for the minimum because they don't really have a 'contract.'

I'm also betting, but not entirely positive, that it's AAV of the contract regardless of when they were acquired. So even if the Giants just call up Shaw he'd appear as a 545k (just looked it up) on the luxury tax sheet, even though they only paid him $87,200 for his services.

According to Cots, the Giants are $287,166 under the tax, but it doesn't look like they have Casey Kelly on there yet.

Sam Dyson accounts for $4,425,000 against the tax. Could free up a ton of room. This season is lost, and Dyson is very replaceable. He needs to be traded.

Cutch would free up even more.

Would it be safe to assume (I'm too lazy to look this up) that none of our farm teams will be in the playoffs this year (I don't think the AZL has playoffs). If that is the case, when was the last time the Giants didn't have any minor league teams make their league playoffs?

The AZL teams do have playoffs. The Giants Black team has the best shot as of now.

The Volcanoes are also in a position for the playoffs, but have a bit longer odds.

It is pretty impressive, though, that the Giants have two AZL teams above .500. You look at the other franchises that have two teams, the Cubs have one good team and one so-so team. The Padres have two so-so teams. The Indians are the only ones that can match the Giants with one great team and one good team. Giants have two good teams.

Does Ramos repeat low A or does he get the bump to San Jose next year? His season numbers alone do not deserve a promotion, but he has come on strong in the last month or so.

If he does go to SJ, that could be a fun team with both Ramos and Bart.

History indicates that he'll jump to San Jose, and you're right his strong finish (.900 OPS in August) is in his favor. I don't think I'd mind if he starts in Augusta, though. There's certainly a lot of rawness in his game that won't necessarily be helped by facing higher competition.

If you look at season numbers, there are not many players at all that deserve promotions next year. A lot will come down, obviously, to who the Giants feel are ready for the jump and/or feel like they need to be challenged at the next level versus repeating the same level.

My favorite under the radar guy from 2018 is JJ Santa Cruz, a non-drafted free agent from Fresno State (I know, I'm biased). He's pitched for 4 different teams (for some reason, he's been assigned to both AZL teams, in addition to stints with August and, currently, Salem-Keizer). So far, he's handled each assignment well, throwing a combined 29.3 innings, giving up 22 hits, 8 runs (6 earned) and 9 walks while striking out 28. He did give up 2 home runs while with Augusta but still kept his WHIP at 0.88 and his ERA at 2.63 while with that team. Not sure why they bumped him back down to Salem.

Hopefully he settles down next year in one spot as opposed to being the taxi man

Good to see Shaw back. Maybe he does come up in Sept. after all.
Somebody said on KNBR yesterday (Hank??) that Shaw may not get the call because they feel he could get traded and the org does not want to expose him to MLB failure and destroy his value.

I got the sense that the opinion was more than just a WAG.

IDK.... the time to trade him would have been last offseason. Seems silly at this point.

I don’t know about that. He had a successful full season in AAA and still has an unstarted MLB clock. He may not be a blue-chipper, but he can be a solid “part b” of a big package.
