Giants activate second baseman Joe Panik, announce Hunter Pence plans

Only move announced so far is Tomlinson to San Jose (!) and Panik activated.

Moves coming for Melancon and Pence.

Hanson won't be activated until sometime next week.

Apparently, Jackson may be the guy who goes down with an "injury".

And Panda taking reps at short? What?!?!?

With Kelby going down, there's no true backup SS
Yeah, I know, but the idea of a former catcher playing shortstop? Scratch that, the idea of Panda playing shortstop? What a year for him - pitcher, 2nd baseman and now shortstop.

Sheffield was drafted as a catcher, broke in as a SS/3B before finally settling as an OF for the bulk of his career.

I don't remember the catcher part of Sheffield. Panda at shortstop just seems like a jarring sight. But I get why the Giants are doing this. Sounds short term, until they are ready to activate Hanson. Seems the FO doesn't want to shock the roster.

I thought they cannot do that to a guy on the dl but apparently I, and the source where I read they couldn't, are both wrong.

Maybe he was removed from the DL first??

Now that I think about it, seems like this was a conversation about this last season (or in spring training?) and that someone found nothing about a rule preventing a team from dfa-ing a player on the dl.

Why wasn't this the move that happened for D-Rod's call up instead of Snelten?
