Just saw it on ESPN. Pretty shocking. Especially considering we are a month away from speedweek at Daytona. Wow

Definitely a bombshell. Almost makes you think he may have a medical condition of some sorts.

Yeah, something is definitely up.:

Edwards is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing to pursue other interests outside of driving and will not compete in 2017. On Wednesday, JGR will announce at a press conference that Daniel Suarez will replace Edwards as the driver of the team's #19 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Toyota. Suarez is the reigning NASCAR XFINITY Series champion. Representatives of Edwards and Joe Gibbs Racing declined comment. David Wilson, president of TRD, U.S.A., also declined comment on Edwards' departure.(FoxSports)(1-10-2017)

No one wants to or maybe can't talk about it. Sounds like it isn't a voluntary retirement.

Pretty shocking. I agree, there's definitely more to this than anyone is letting on. So both of the only Cup drivers I cared about retire in the same offseason. Really making it very difficult for me to care about this upcoming season.

This will be me when Junior retires which should be very shortly. I barely cared about the season once he was out.

It's all those backflips. His spine probably resembles a telescope

Tony retiring really killed my interest, although it has been waning ever since he dumped Grubb after 2011. Carl retiring in the same offseason (only other guy I really rooted for) has killed itboff dead since there's really nobody I care about anymore. I might occasionally watch the trucks or xfinity series since I still like Sadler and Sauter.

Assuming its not something crazy like drugs or some odd medical condition, IMO this could just be the norm nowadays. Even with all the safety improvements its still the most dangerous sport in America, while the money isn't nearly as tops as it was in the 2000's, they still make a ton. Bottom line is there really is no reason to race 20+ years like they used to. The days of these guys driving into their 50's like Bill Elliott, R. Wallace, Petty, Martin, Gant, Labonte. Earnhardt Sr was 49 when he died and likely would have raced another 2-3 years atleast are over. I expect Jimmie Johnson, harvick, Kenseth, and Dale Jr to soon follow suit.

So close, so many times. Have to feel like the way last season ended he would want to give it at least one more shot. Something definitely wrong here.

FWIW, I don't Carl has seemed like himself the last couple of years anyway. He was always super positive and always had lots of energy but since then (last season especially), he seemed to be going through the motions. He was totally professional, smiled, did all his commitments, but something seemed off. Like a spark wasn't there or something. I figured it was just him getting older but maybe he just got tired of racing? :noidea: Either way, its very surprising. No one saw it coming

He gave 3 reasons for stepping away, nothing ground breaking.
1) He is satisfied with his career.
2) He wants to spend more time with his family and things he is passionate about.
3) He is in good health now, and wants to keep it that way.

I saw where he had said something about how Jr's concussion problems this past season had a little to do with it.

He doesn't need the money. He is interested in other things. He is satisfied with his career. Sounds like he is moving along with life. Simple enough.

Never liked him, but this still seems really odd especially with the timing. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more going on here than we may ever know.

I saw that he had mentioned about how Dale Jr's concussions had a little bit to do with it. But I still think we won't know the whole story for a long time, if at all.

Maybe Carl wants to follow in Tony Stewart's footsteps and own his own team in conjunction with JGR. Or maybe he'll pull a Jeffy and un-retire when normal life gets too boring.
