surprised they let Kupchak go as well, but I guess they are looking for a completely fresh start

Probably the Timofey Mozgov and Deng contracts that did Mitch in.

very true

especially Mozgov as Black and Zubac have played better than him.

They say that you never go into business with your friends. Magic hired Rob Pelinka, Kobe's agent as the new GM. The guy has little-to-no experience as a GM. Magic also wants Kobe to become a player liaison of some sort, to do what I am not quite sure. These moves appear to have a lot of rah, rah attached to them and little else. Magic doesn't exactly boast the most sterling of a record as an administrator or head coach. I guess we will all watch and see how this unfolds but for now Lou Williams is gone.

Honestly...that's a bit disrespectful what they did to Mitch. At least let him go after the trade deadline. 30 years of service (including 5 championships) and they toss him out like he's fucking Matt Millen.

Magic may turn this team into the old Clippers. Going down a slippery slope.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping they'd keep Mitch, even if in a different role. But end of the day, probably worth it to get rid of Jim.

I think Trojan might be right, he probably became a Jim buss guy after Jerry passed. And Jeanie was just waiting to come in with some Magic. lol. Of course Mitch is well loved in LA, and he made a shit ton of money and can work anywhere, i dont feel that bad.

I could have lived with mitch, but I won't lose any sleep with his departure.

I think Mitch would have been a better GM without Short Buss being around. That might have been the better move in the long run, but if Rob Pelinka and Ryan West are better at finding great talent and FAs than by all means let us get on with it.

as long as these moves get the Lakers moving in the right direction, I'm all for it.

like that Magic was able to acquire a 1st round pick for Williams since they may lose theirs this year. and since this is considered a deep draft, even a late 1st will be helpful.

Should be a mid-to-late first rounder from Houston depending on where they finish in the regular season, ALR. I hope we get a second rounder at some point this year if we do anymore trading before the end of business tomorrow. BTW here is what we are staring at the next three years. Looks like the Laers finishing in the top three and getting that pick after the drawing is becoming more important for future pick holdings. Maybe that is why in the back of everyone's minds, winning is not that important just yet.

2018 second round draft pick from Denver
Denver's 2018 2nd round pick to L.A. Lakers (via Utah to Chicago) [Denver-Golden State-Utah, 7/10/2013; Atlanta-Chicago-Utah, 2/18/2016; Chicago-L.A. Lakers, 7/7/2016]

2019 second round draft pick from Chicago
Chicago's 2019 2nd round pick to L.A. Lakers [Chicago-L.A. Lakers, 7/7/2016]

2017 first round draft pick to Philadelphia
L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Philadelphia (via Phoenix) protected for selections 1-3 in 2017 and unprotected in 2018 [L.A. Lakers-Phoenix, 7/11/2012; Milwaukee-Philadelphia-Phoenix, 2/19/2015]

2019 first round draft pick to Orlando
If the L.A. Lakers convey a 1st round pick to Philadelphia in 2017, then the L.A. Lakers will convey their 2019 1st round pick to Orlando; if the L.A. Lakers do not convey a 1st round pick to Philadelphia in 2017, then the L.A. Lakers will instead convey their 2017 2nd round pick and 2018 2nd round pick to Orlando [L.A. Lakers-Orlando, 8/10/2012]

2019 second round draft pick to Portland or Cleveland
Portland will receive the more favorable of the L.A. Lakers' 2019 2nd round pick (via Indiana to Cleveland) and Minnesota's 2019 2nd round pick (via Cleveland) and Cleveland will receive the less favorable of these two picks [Cleveland-Minnesota, 6/25/2015; Indiana-L.A. Lakers, 7/9/2015; Cleveland-Indiana, 7/23/2015; Cleveland-Portland, 7/27/2015]

wow, Retro

it looks like the Lakers really need to get a top 3 pick again to help them both this draft and future drafts. better to give up two 2nds rather than a 1st in 2019.

let's hope the ping pong balls bounce their way once more so they can help the team now and in the future, and who knows, if things go right, that 1st rounder next year that is unprotected will be middle of the round.

Indeed. It is really important we secure that top three pick this year or the selections in future first rounder drafts are really in jeopardy unless there are future trades that net us a pick.

Even if we secure our top three pick this draft year Tomodach, we lose our second rounders for the next three years with various contributions from those awful trades by Short Buss directing Mitch Kupchak. I suspect that some of this is feeding the urgency of Magic but he'd better get some help or we will be in a shithole for awhile.

Yea. You laid out a depressing analysis. No team should ever be at whim of ping pong balls or tanking for 8 damn years.
