Sanders holds him in just about every category, and was on a horrible team that just keyed on him

Simply not true, but I won't explain again... Go look at the teams Walter was on in his prime, you just might shed a tear.

I explained it in the other threads. He was not on terrible teams. The Lions made the playoff 5 times in 10 seasons he was with the team, he had pro bowl offensive lineman, the first receiving duo to each go over 100 receptions. Go look at the teams Walter played on, much much worse than anything Barry played with.

Payton was relentless and he carried such a heavy workload especially early in his career. But then I look at their numbers and there's very little difference when it comes to attempts per game. I think Barry was better, but Sweetness was everything you want in a RB. I abstain.

Barry is remembered for two things, the WOW plays and the fact he quit while on top. He never had the end of the career 600 yard 2 TD seasons like so many other backs go through, another reason IMO Jim Brown is remembered so fondly. People simply chose to not remember all the negative runs or his inability to block or that he came off the field in certain situations.

Walter was simply great at everything while Barry was not.

Nos' doesn't like Barry. (You gotta slip the "quit" in there instead of "retire".)But Walter passed off the torch to him anyway. And Barry still holds on to it firmly to this day. Probably will for decades. Not a guy in the league that will come close to his greatest. Although McCoy is something to see.

The negative runs don't matter when he averaged 5 yards per carry (versus Payton's 4.4). And Payton's average didn't change over his 3 last seasons, which were 3 more than Barry played.

The Bears were 4 games > .500 Payton's first 5 full seasons and made the postseason twice. He was not a full time back his first season when they went 4-10. They weren't good but they were not terrible his first 6 seasons. After that they went 6-10 then Ditka was hired the strike shortened season and they were off & running after that. Payton's team's over they course of his career were not worse than Barry's by any objective measure. If anyone has a gripe about playing for crappy teams it's OJ.

Those who cite Barry's negative runs don't understand how math works. There's no other explanation. Every back has runs for a negative gain.

One thing that needs to be thought about is how bad the teams Walter was on during his prime.

in 1976 Bob Avellini completed 43% of his passes for 1580 yards 8 TD's and 15 INT's. That was starting all 14 games. Walter that season had 1390 yards rushing and 13 TD's. Just a little sample of what the greatest running back of all time had to play with in his prime years.

Either that or we realize that after 10 rushes and 10 yards then pop he goes for 40 doesn't take away the 3 drive killers he had earlier in the game.

Barry by a significant margin.

This.

The only reason Walter Payton is in this discussion is because he passed away. He's in the class with Eric Dickerson.

Barry and it's not even close.
