NEW YORK -- In a lot of ways, Delino DeShields' season has mimicked that of the Rangers.

It went south fast for both and neither recovered.

Now with 40 games remaining, it's all about planning for the future. And the same question must be answered by both: Is DeShields part of the long-term center field equation?

"We want to see the approach that makes him successful," manager Jeff Banister said after DeShields was activated from the disabled list Sunday morning and before he had an infield hit in four at-bats in a 7-2 loss to New York. "I know he wants to be more than just an on-base guy, but it starts there. Grind out at-bats. Put the ball on the ground. Use his speed. He's successful when he does that."

If he doesn't: It appears the Rangers are prepared to look in other directions for the present and future.

He's been doing that. He's hitting just above .200. It's not working.

Seems like the Cubs fixed Hammels. What does that say about the Rangers pitching coach.

don't think there was anything wrong with him other than the team we put on the field behind him

You're partly right for sure. He got little run support. Also, Hamels pitched fine when he was away from the Globe.

I think he would have seen different results if he was pitching in Arlington with a roof over his head. In 2017 the difference was rather minimal but in 2016 and this year the difference in his home and away ERA was very noticeable.

Here are Cole Hamels' numbers against the American League before being traded to the Rangers.

An 8-15 record with an ERA of 4.73 and a WHIP of 1.36. He allowed a batting average against of .280 and a slugging percentage against of .495. He allowed an OPS of .824.

That is why he is doing better now that he is back in the National League.

He also doesn't seem to like pitching while rumors are flying about him being traded as both times while he was about to be traded he went through a very bad streak.

I have a feeling those numbers align with his 2016 and 2018 away metrics.

Joe Maddon was interviewed yesterday about Hammels yesterday. He said they noticed thst the way he was positioning his left leg was forcing his upper half to get out in front of his lower half. They had him make some mechinal adjustments and continue to make sure he stays with that adjustment. This is what I was going by.

When you look at his splits by opponents ordered by ERA against each team it shows that 12 of the top 16 teams are NL opponents. All of the teams that he has a higher ERA than 4.00 against are all AL teams.

I thought once he got here and pitched against AL teams more often that those numbers would improve some, but not enough to make the trade worth it. When we traded for him I mentioned on here that I was expecting an ERA close to 4.00 while he was here. That isn't the ERA of an Ace and that is why I was against the trade when it happened. It was 3.90.

Somehow his ERA was better in 2016, but I think that was a fluke since his WHIP that year was right at the same as it was with us this year.

Our Pitching coaches and manager are terrible.

I’m starting to think maybe iapoce isn’t bad tho.
