Lions DT Ndamukong Suh has hired Jay-Z and Roc Nation as his new representation.
Suh fired agent Roosevelt Barnes last month and was fully expected to hire Jay-Z. The Lions and Suh can now get to hammering out a long-term extension in an effort to reduce his $22.4 million 2014 cap hit. Suh earned $51.8 million in his first four seasons and may become the highest-paid defensive player.

Good. Suh is the real face of this team.

Lions DT Ndamukong Suh -- $22,412,500: Suh's cap number is a product of restructuring his five-year rookie contract (worth up to $68 million with $40 million fully guaranteed) twice in the past two years. Detroit's cap situation makes it difficult for them to handle his cap number. When tenders for three restricted free agents and five exclusive rights players with expiring contracts are included, the Lions are approximately $9.375 million over the projected 2014 cap. Detroit can't afford for Suh to play out his contract if they carry his cap number because it will be virtually impossible to use a franchise tag on him in 2015. His franchise tag number will be $26.87 million, which is based off of 120 percent of his 2014 cap number. A contract extension for Suh should be the richest veteran deal in NFL history for a defensive tackle because he probably won't consider a decrease from his rookie contract after becoming a four-time All-Pro in his four NFL seasons.

NFL's Highest-Paid Defensive Players
PlayerTeamPos.Avg. Salary
Mario Williams BUF DE$16 million
Darrelle Revis TB CB $16 million
Julius Peppers CHI DE $14 million
Clay Matthews GB OLB $13.2 million
Charles Johnson CAR DE $12.7 million

Worth every penny. Find WRs in late rounds like everyone else and do what it takes to keep our D line intact.

Exactly my thoughts, Rob.

He averaged nearly 13 mil per year and Cincy's Geno Atkins got a 5yr 55 mil contract last year, so I won't be surprised to see 13-14 mil per year.

I think the Atkins deal is the benchmark. Suh will likely get a 500k per year raise over that deal, imo.

Did you forget that this is in the hands of Lewand and Mayhew also, not just what Suh will ask for. Look at the history of deals made.

We went 0-16 with him on our team and were a bunch of pussies until Suh came along.

I think the whoever the highest paid D player in the nfl is will be the benchmark. Suh deserves more than whoever that is and he'll get it.

This is EXACTLY what happens when your team is run by clowns. Because they have continued to mismanage the cap year after year after year you have absolutely no negotiating leverage with Suh and will most likely have to give in to his demands and pay him a wage that is well in excess of the market, which was set only one year ago in the Atkins contract. He should be the highest paid DT in the league, but not by a 20%+ premium over the next highest position contract. That right there is how and why the Lions cap situation is a mess every single year.

The Lions have almost no choice but to get a deal done with Suh to free up cap space, and you can sure bet that he and his agent know that. The Lions need to get a new deal done, Suh doesnt need to at this point so he is standing on the Lions balls. Two different restructures during only a five year contract and you still have almost $19.5m of dead money on the deal??? If Suh disappeared on the island from the show Lost we would still have to eat cap hits in each of the next two years of $9.8m. I defy someone to try and sell that to the board as good cap mgmt.

This is what they do, and keep doing, and keep doing, and there ARE consequences. Everyone thinks that money will always come available and its because of this crap. Getting stuck with big contracts of players under the old rookie deals was NOT the cause of the Lions salary cap woes, it is from all of these damn contract restructuring.

ZERO leverage = overpaying. Get used to it because thats the hole The Allen Park Clown Show has dug for the team. It's not going away and will actually only keep getting worse.

More so has to do with always picking in top 5 and starting out with massive contracts. Great players get massive 2nd deals no matter what. It's those first ones before the pay scale changed that fucks the Lions.

My words exactly. Suh is a beast and he has set the level of play that is expected on both sides of the ball. A new coach and a new attitude... Your Lions are going to be dangerous IMO.

It hurt the Lions yes, but it was the numerous restructures of CJ, Stafford, and Suh that killed them. $91.5m in dead money on those 3 guys right now. It shouldn't be half that number.

Nobody has more dead money on their contracts than the Lions do, and if they want to create room to do anything in FA, and after the new Suh deal is completed, that number will go up even further.

Were both right cause the restructures due in part to needing to thin out those original contracts. It's like a damned if you do damned if you don't scenario with 3 top 5 players. The solution to all this is winning and good drafting outside of the top 5.

Salary Caps for 2014

» Over the Cap- NFL Salary Cap Space 2013

reading this article will absolutely make you cringe.

It wouldn't be a bad thing, financially speaking, to be the Raida's, Jags, Colt's, Skin's, Browns, Vikings

BTW; Brown's canned Pres. Joe Banner and GM Mike Lombardi today. Bill Ford Jr. should grow the same pair of balls that Brown's owner Jimmy Haslam has. Haslam has admitted his mistakes in hiring former HC Chudzinkski and the (2) above. Result, Fired their ASSES !!!!

It's hard to argue that the Lions have made good decisions regarding their cap. The dead money is a bubble that keeps getting bigger. As with any postponement of 'paying the price', the longer it's postponed, the bigger the bubble gets, the worse it is when the piper shows up.

Suh is the best at his position.
CJ is the best at his position.
Staff needs to start earning his money. Otherwise, it's, "Bailiff! Whack his pee-pee!"
